OK, I messed something up but I'm at a loss on how to fix it. I had installed the nVidia drivers previously on the installation 2.4.21-166. IIRC this was by installing the kernel-source-2.4.21-166 package. If this is correct then I'm in a real jam. I can't find a kernel-source for the recently patched kernel 2.4.21-192 Unfortunately I don't have much of a GUI on that machine right now so I can't seem to do much with it. Any suggestions?

Interestingly, this worked better than it did last time. I downloaded the latest (5336) NVIDIA script and it seems to have picked everything up just fine. I did notice one problem though. My tty terminals still do not work (Out Of Range). Is there any way to get this working at all? Even if it's ugly and big and dumb looking...

Assumed you did that already...When Nvidia goes wrong worth re-installing or doing sanity check, if it passes sanity check well worth re-installing imho (nvidia-innstaller --help will give an idea).

Changed monitor settings down at all? Matt

Don't know if this will help, but it might be the settings for the framebuffer used with bootsplash. On mine, if I try to use a 1280x1024 resolution, it will put the monitor out of range, even though X will work. Mine has to be 1024x768. This happened to my brother, he left his box on auto-update, had it running for a few days straight then switched his box off, on power up greeted without X. Kernel had been updated and it took me awhile to fix the issue, most of it spent hunting the kernel source which ahd not been updated along with the source. Hate Nvidia sometimes, wish it was more...Seamless. Matt

I got lucky. the base version (2.4.21) didn't change. But I downloaded the latest NVIDIA run script and it went EXTREMELY WELL. Much better than it did the last few times. You MUST run SaX afterwards.
