[opensuse] 12.1 does not automatically start KDE
In the mean time happy with 12.1. Kmail working and no big problems. But since three days after reboot I end up at level 3 and have to enter my name and password. After that a startx will find me in KDE and I am up to use it. Found a lot of info in .xsession-errors but as I am no expert I would appreciate help to solve my problem. First with my boot problem and then to reduce the size of the error file ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xauth: file /home/constant/.serverauth.3869 does not exist X.Org X Server 1.10.4 Release Date: 2011-08-19 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX Current Operating System: Linux bigone 3.2.0-2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jan 5 16:50:33 UTC 2012 (d839831) i686 Kernel command line: root=/dev/disk/by-label/suse113main resume=/dev/disk/by- label/swap1 splash=silent quiet vga=0x31a Build Date: 10 November 2011 03:34:02PM Current version of pixman: 0.22.0 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Hi Constant, I just went through the same thing, Following is an excerpt from a nessage bt Felix Niata whuch fixed it for me. Worth a try. "I previously told you to try to change /etc/sysconfig/boot's RUN_PARALLEL from yes to no. Just do it. You have separate partitions for both /tmp and /var, and this looks like evidence of "yes" trying to proceed with something that requires /var before /var is ready to use." Hope it works Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks Bob. That was the solution I remembered and applied. Did not solve the problem. I just end up at a console when I boot and when I shut down. Another thing I told Bob was to try reading the relnote section on F5 and sysvinit-init. http://www.suse.de/relnotes/i386/openSUSE/12.1/RELEASE-NOTES.en.html#12 -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Dear Felix, that was the other measure I remembered and tried out. No effect. Do you have something else to try out? :D -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE and KDE4 on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 12.1 (i586) Kernel: 3.2.0-2-desktop LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.7.4 (4.7.4) 10:01am up 11:30, 3 users, load average: 0.62, 0.70, 0.47 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not likely anything I didn't put in my replies to the threads Bob S started here and on the KDE list(s) in recent weeks, but note I installed 12.1 on his system over a month ago with sysvinit-init, KDE3 and Gnome on NVidia, with no KDE4. Using sysvinit-init you get /var/log/boot.msg to use for troubleshooting. Systemd is unable to do that. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Thanks. Looked through the boot.msg and did not find anything special. One question. Does your boot.msg also ends with : Kernel logging (ksyslog) stopped. Kernel log daemon terminating. -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE and KDE4 on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 12.1 (i586) Kernel: 3.2.0-2-desktop LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.7.4 (4.7.4) 12:18pm up 1:57, 3 users, load average: 0.12, 0.10, 0.14 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Those are 73% down from the top here running with PARALLEL_BOOT=yes and sysvinit-init on 32 bit single core CPU. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
