[opensuse] Simple appointment manager -- what do you use?
Hi, What do you guys use for a simple appointment or reminder manager? Nothing fancy; I'd like to input a date/time and get a popup or an email some time ahead that the appointment is up. Integration in email or some other personal information manager is not needed; in fact, I would prefer a standalone application since I use Emacs for mail and actually manage my appointments on another system. It's just that I don't want to forget the next telecon when I'm deeply buried in work. ;-) I.e., Evolution or Kontact are too heavy for my taste. iCal object support would be nice, but is not a must. I would prefer a GUI, but that is neither a showstopper. Up to now, I have used plan (http://www.bitrot.de/plan.html) for that task, but that has been thrown out of SUSE for some time. Before I install it manually again on a new system, I'd like to get some opinion about potential substitute applications. But it doesn't popup a window and doesn't send email either... And it's not reliably activated at my desk when I do heavy writing work (the one where I need reminder popups in the first place ;-). Out of curiosity, are you saying that you are able to sync up your mobile phone using opensuse? I use my mobile phone (Motorola) for appointments all the time but haven't found a way to sync it with Linux. I have Motorola phone tools installed on a dual boot computer and have to sync up my phone using windows only. If you know of a way to sync the phone with Linux and integrate the data into evolution or korganizer, please let me know how you do it. Thanks! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Don't do it regularly now as find online easier : all I did was plug a USB bluetooth dongle into this SuSE 10 laptop, "discovered" the phone and ran the evolution sync system and it seemed to work. Slight issue with GMT and BST (appts out by an hour on evolution) but I think that was my error in the way I had the phone set. tkremind/remind will generate email reminders, popups, initiate programs, cl and graphic functions, generates displayable calander and printable post-script file.

Joachim I am using Kalarm, it has a lot of flexability in that it will give you an alarm, send email or execute a program of your choosing. The author has been quite supportive too. Years ago I just used the ascii based calendar reminder service that used to be on Unix systems and also available on Linux. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello Joachim , Thomas Driemeyer - Plan <w4d@bitrot.de> did say to me on 23 January 2007 :- _____________ < . . . then I better arrange for a 10.2 installation somewhere, so I won't be blocking all progress in the Linux world :-) > ........................................ Thus, with a little PLEASE, PLEASE, looks like Thomas Driemeyer may be so kind and adjust his "PLAN" so it will compile on SuSE 10.2 { think there were probs relating to tiff/motiv or X-Org/X11R6 } best wishes -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Cool. Can you suggest some programs to accomplish this with? Specifically, linux friendly? I know it can be done with a windows compatible phone and outlook, both of which I have abjured. My current phone, Motorola A732, uses linux for OS, has calendar, but I have not seen how to access, sync, or what calendar program it might use. Suggestions on where to go for more clues? Please don't suggest the Motorola site...since this phone is not sold in US I can barely find it there, often only by saying I am in Taiwan and hoping not too much of the following info is in Chinese. Thanks for your guidance. (And it is ok to say it is really simple and I am just a little dull not to have found it yet.) Well, the thread was about appointment managers, and my reply was mostly about the use of the phone for that purpose. Syncing was an afterthought, which some phones can do and others can not. My point was that with everything in the phone and the phone in the pocket, who needs to sync? Admittedly those with a busy appointment calendar might need this more than I, especially when others can push things on your calendar. But then those people are probably using outlook anyway, in which case the dreaded Moto Phone tools are a workable solution. (although not great). (Have you tried it? It might just work anyway, it seems to know about tons of Motorola phones). Once there is a good easy to use group calendaring software for linux someone will surely wright a phone sync for it. I've looked at a few, and found them wanting. My phone comes with MotoSync which seems to run with Exchange server only at this time. I've never really spent any time looking at it. http://www.linuxelectrons.com/News/Mobile/20040727012053584 However my phone will also do Imap to my company mail server, as well as run the down-loadable gmail application (quite a nice app) so I'm pretty well in the loop while traveling, and it will upload/download lots of different file formats to my laptop via bluetooth or usb. Google has a calendar, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that offered for phones some day, but right now all it can do is send sms messages to your phone for events. No bidirectional syncing. The linux mobile phone tools are pretty lame at this point in time. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

In fact, I use that currently and it doesn't work. When I schedule intensive work (e.g., writing a paper or an important presentation), I turn my mobile silent. And that turns the alarm silent as well. Gak! That would be bad. Mine has a selection of ring styles, and on each selection you can choose which events get which sounds (or silence) so that allows me to silence the phone, but still get alarms and calls from those for which I have selected special ring tones. I also have a call divert option which sends all calls to voice mail instantly. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

iCal object support would be nice, but is not a must. I would prefer a GUI, but that is neither a showstopper.
Since you use Emacs, why not use appt.el? You can configure it to get a popup frame. And use icalendar.el for iCal support. Steve Berman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I didn't knew about appt.el -- I knew only diary for appointments, and that doesn't do popups. Thanks for the hint.
