[opensuse] Nuisance with Evince
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I'm on XFCE (Leap 15.1), and I have a nuisance problem with Evince. When I open a PDF document (invoices from several providers) the window is always a bit bigger than the usable area of the display, it goes under the panel area at the bottom of the screen, so that I always have to resize it. But first, as the bottom edge is not visible, I have to resize dragging the top edge down a fair bit, then move the top edge of the window to the top of the screen, and then resize the bottom edge of the window down to the actual edge of the display, not what it thinks the display size is. Use fixed size font to see the drawings: ************************************** * +------------+ * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * ************************************** resize down from top edge: ************************************** * * * ^+------------+ * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * ************************************** move up ************************************** * +---^--------+ * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * +------------+ * * * ************************************** resize up from bottom edge ************************************** * +------------+ * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * | | * * +------------+^ * ************************************** What is this, bug, feature, configuration issue? I already did that. No use. The link says:
Change default settings
When a document is opened for the first time, default settings, such as zoom and page view preferences, are applied. Any changes you make to these settings are saved for the document.
No, the size and position are not saved or not correctly for the document. On next open the document is bigger than vissible display again.
You can save the settings which you are currently using as default for all new documents by pressing the menu button in the top-right corner of the window and selecting Save Current Settings as Default.
Well, as the settings for one document doesn't work, it will not work for other documents defaults either. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)

The trick is to determine why these settings aren't being saved. As you surmised, it appears to be related to GNOME (dconf and gvfs.) What is this, bug, feature, configuration issue? Maybe it is a Gnome application and their devs don't care at all about behaving correctly in XFCE?
Dunno, I always use atril instead of evince since it seems to behave more reasonably to my way of thinking. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I will install it and try. The name is familiar. [...] Wow. The following 22 NEW packages are going to be installed: atril atril-backends atril-lang libatrildocument3 libatrilview3 mate-desktop-gschemas mate-desktop-gschemas-branding-openSUSE mathjax mathjax-ams-fonts mathjax-caligraphic-fonts mathjax-fraktur-fonts mathjax-main-fonts mathjax-math-fonts mathjax-sansserif-fonts mathjax-script-fonts mathjax-size1-fonts mathjax-size2-fonts mathjax-size3-fonts mathjax-size4-fonts mathjax-typewriter-fonts mathjax-winchrome-fonts mathjax-winie6-fonts Well, on first open of a file, it has the same size problem; but on the second open of the same file it remembered the changes. That's an improvement. On an open of another document, again it opens at the last size, good. So yes, it solves my problem, thanks. Now I have to look at other characteristics. It has fewer features, but so far I don't miss important ones compared to Evince. Well, the menu bar at the top is double the size, leaving less area for the document. I can see annotations, but apparently I can not create them :-? Neither sees signatures. Neither can select a region as a graphic for pasting somewhere else. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. [...] For the record, to make atril the application opened by 'mc' by default, go to XFCE settings, "MIME type editor", and change the default app for pdf. 'mc' actually calls "xdg-open". -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)
