Lprng and SuSE 8.1 personal
I am trying to use a Lexmark z35 inkjet printer with SuSE 8.1 personal. I was able to use this printer without any trouble in Mandrake 8.2 using the Lprng print spooler. I have tried to install the lprng spooler in SuSE two ways: first I tried by choosing printer configuration in YaST2. I selected Lprng as the printing system I wanted to use, but after YaST2 was done installing the packages from CD1 and 2 the printer configuration still said that no spooler was installed. The second way that I tried to install lprng was to download lprng-3.8.12-46.i586.rpm from rpmseek.com. The rpm package was from SuSE 8.1 (so it said). After installing this rpm YaST2 told me that I had a corrupted or incomplete lprng installation. I tried the same rpm from a number of different servers all with the same result. An interesting thing about the rpm that I downloaded is that I was able to install the lexmark printer driver and print pdf files with the lprng print spooler, but I could not print any other type of file (jpg, tif, openoffice.org documents, etc.) I hope someone has the answer. Thank you for your time and suggestions. Sorry for the previous hijacking

Hi Pete I have the same Lexmarkz35 and have the same problem as you. I have downloaded the drivers for linux from lexmark and did exactly as was instructed. I have also posted here this problem a couple of times and till today have no answer on this lexmark z35 printer probleme. It seems to me we will have to dig in our pockets and get a printer that suits suse. I have looked all over and tryed everything to get this cotton picken printer to work. If no anwser pops up then we will have to keep expermenting until we do. Good look -- The most valueable Treasure you have, lay within you. I would tend to agree. Prior to cups I never had any luck printing anything. Now the only problem I have is when printing from Mozilla 1.3a I get two blank sheets of paper before each job. CUPs may work for you but try to add your own filter to it.... I was unable to do so. LPRng works fine for me (and many). I discovered that I had to download the filters.rpm from the SuSE FTP website to get my printer, an HP 648c, to work correctly under CUPS. Christopher Reimer

Sure Cups work, as my lexmarkz35 sits around and waits it turn to be ppd in ;-) and Ghostscripting seems to be invisible to even scare the ink cartrage to jet out a little ink. Thanxs anyway for the 6 word tip. The most valueable Treasure you have, lay within you. Regards Ralph Robinson icq#26003826 www.superhanau.de (in renovation)

Since writing my first message about the Lprng problem I have gotten the printer to work. I still can not print from the pixie image viewer but I can print from all other applications that I have tried. I am using a lprng rpm that I downloaded from rpmseek.com the rpm was from the SuSE 8.1 update build. After installing lprng I loaded the lexmark driver and everything worked. If I can be of any help to you let me know.

Hello Pete Thank you for trying to give me a hand at getting the Lexmarkz35 to print. I am glad to see that you have gotten yours to work. Okay this is what I did. 1-Ran Yast, Hardware, Printer, then printer detection. (Auto detect finds First USB printer (/dev/usb/lp0)) then I click on Finish. I would normally click on configure but there is nothing there that works with that will work with Lexz35. 2. I installed the Lexmarkz35 drivers I got from Lexmark support for linux. The installation installed ok. Useing the printer interface from the lexmark driver ,The print alienment test worked ok but slow. When I made a tryed to print a test page however, I got no response. With the kprint manager I tryed changing settings such as lpr/lprng but did not work. I also tryed the cups setting, also without success. Useing SuSE 8.1 with a KDE 3.1 update. Now can you please tell me your proceedure in getting your Lexmarkz35 to run. TIA Ralph The most valueable Treasure you have, lay within you.
