[opensuse] No shutdown messages
Since a long time (probably starting from openSUSE 13.2 until now - Tumbleweed) I have the problem on one of my PCs, where I can't see any shutdown messages ("Stopping service XYZ ...") on shutdown. I already switched to all consoles. There is nothing. Start-up messages ("Starting service XYZ ...") show up. Shutdown, suspend/resume etc. itself works. On shutdown after around 5-10 seconds the PC powers off. But if there will be a problem in future, I have no change to see, which service causes problems during shutdown. I already tried different things: * Start-up/shutdown without X11 (runlevel 3) * Playing with Grub Kernel options; currently "resume=/dev/sda2 nomodeset gfxpayload=vga=normal video=vesa:off quiet" * Playing Plymouth options; currently no "splash=silent" and no "showopts" Nothing worked until now. I am also suppress to kill the following warning from NVidia driver: [ 29.855924] NVRM: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console [ 29.855927] NVRM: on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver [ 29.855929] NVRM: requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console [ 29.855930] NVRM: drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in [ 29.855931] NVRM: corruption and stability problems, and is not supported. Any ideas? Hard to really help when you come out with a statement such as this one, "Nothing worked until now." meaning that "it" is now working. So what then is your problem?

Ah OK :-) . Just a simple "brain-slip" :-) . But I must be misunderstanding what your problem is -- I mean, when I right-click on the desktop I get the menu where I can Shutdown or Restart the computer and when I do choose to Shutdown I don't see anything about "Stopping service XYZ...". And in a konsole, as root when I type "halt-p" the computer simply shuts down in a matter of seconds. OK, I am running 13.2 at the moment and I know that the screen is a bit different in TW to shutdown or to restart the computer but I have never seen this "Stopping service XYZ.." which you mention above. Have you checked in SYSTEM SETTINGS>SESSION MANAGEMENT to see what you have configured there? And in a konsole, as root when I type "halt-p" the computer simply shuts down in a matter of seconds. Then you basically have to same problem. openSUSE should print some "Stopping service XYZ..." messages on shutdown. For me it makes no difference, if I shutdown from desktop or if I type "shutdown -h now" in text console. The "Stopping service XYZ..." are invisible in both scenarios.
I think, that this is not the indented behavior. My laptop with Intel/NVidia dual graphics shows the "Stopping service XYZ..." messages.

Have you checked in SYSTEM SETTINGS>SESSION MANAGEMENT to see what you have configured there? Yes, but there I mostly find desktop services and options with the exception of some SDDM settings. Currently I use KDM because of this unsolved SDDM bug: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=969813

Things to think about: If plymouth is installed, try remove it. What is the kernel command line? (you get it from the start of the system log, or from "cat /proc/cmdline"). - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
