No eth0 connection after soundcard config in Yast...
Hello, something strange happened on my OS 15.3 with KDE, after posting this here:
- during the bot messages I get snd-hda-intel ... cannot probe codec, giving up
Carlos said:
You just need to configure sound with Yast. There will be an old entry which you have to delete, and let it add automatically the new one.
So I happily went to Yast, Hardware, Audio... - I see two sound cards, Intel and Nvidia - I click on "Bearbeiten" on Intel (setup?) and chose "fast" -> sound gets switched of - I deleted both (clicked on delete, but nothing happened), said ok, rebooted, had sound again But: No network, no internet. After changing in Yast from networkmanager to wicked and then back again, I can now access WiFi, but ethernet isn't here (it doesn't show in Networkmanager). lspci -k gives: 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller I225-V (rev 03) Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device e000 Kernel modules: igc 05:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wi-Fi 6 AX200 (rev 1a) Subsystem: Intel Corporation Wi-Fi 6 AX200NGW Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi Kernel modules: iwlwifi How can I make my ethernet/eth0 work again? Thanks for help... Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

How strange... Could there be a collision between Intel sound and Intel Ethernet somehow? It "deleted" the wrong driver? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

"lspci" (as root) will show you what hardware you have, there will be a line with "Ethernet controller". If you post that, I'm sure we can work out which driver it needs.

it gives
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Controller I225-V (rev 03)
I think the driver module is probably "igc". -- Per Jessen, Zürich (13.0°C)

lspci has given you the right module: igc Does the ethernet controller show up in the YaST hardware list? Try shutting down the system, turn off the switch on the power supply for about 30 seconds or so, then reboot the system. It's possible that the state of the ethernet controller was somehow mangled, eg. during a hardware probe. My ethernet controller somehow disappeared a few days ago, and that is the only way I got it back.

Thank you Darryl, that made it! I rebooted several times before with no change, but now I shut it down and switched the power supply of and after counting to 30 switched it on again, booted - and here is my eth0, up and working Tanks! -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

You can "drain" the system faster. Just unplug the main power and press the start button two, three times. You may notice the leds blink as capacitor are discharging but it will have the same effect (usually) like waiting for the 30 secs with the switch off.

I'm not going to guarantee anything, but my solution was to use networkmanager. Then eth0 worked. I use WiFi for all the computers to access the internet, and a gigabit switch for NFS between them. It's a real pain, fire off yast, switch to wicked, change things, switch to networkmanager. Networking with openSUSE is strange, things break for no reason. I have 2 computer, one home-built the other a Lenovo, where the WiFi just disappeared for no reason, gone not seen, no way to configure it, I'd buy a USB WiFi device to get things working, then discover that later (almost a year later in one instance) that the factory WiFi on the motherboard had started working again. Makes me very nervous about applying patches when I'm not physically sitting in front of the machine, which will leave 4 computers static, as far as patching goes, for 5 months out of the year. I ssh in from 3,000 miles away and hope the thing comes back up when I reboot after a kernel/udev update, or just turn itself into a space heater until I can sit down in front of it again. I still haven't a clue as to why WiFi will require me to give it a password to access the router when it shows that password when I go into the configure network connections menu.

One option is to switch to the third network option: systemd-networkd. I've switched all my Leap 15.3+ and TW installations to it exclusively, except I think for a laptop given to me that I didn't install Leap on, which I upgraded from 15.2 to 15.3. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science.
