SuSE 9.3 Login/Splash Screen Problem
On Monday, I upgraded my SuSE 9.2 home system to SuSE 9.3 Professional. I used the "in situ" method instead of a fresh install. No problems were encountered until it came to using SaX2 to configure the graphics adapter and monitor. I have an Athlon 2800+ dual-processor system with a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics adapter and a ViewSonic ViewPanel VP201m display. The VP201m can support resolutions up to 1600x1200. When turned on, the VP201m simulates a 1024x768 VGA monitor. There is a "bug" in the interaction between SaX2, the X11 server, and the nv driver included in the SuSE 9.3 Professional software distribution. At some point SaX2 gets hold of the VP201m default geometry, 1024x768, It is saved and passed to the X11 server and nv driver where it is treated as the maximum size of the viewable area even though you set the resolution to 1600x1200. When the KDE desktop displayed, the Kicker bar and the window frames were scaled for a 1024x768. The window canvas was scaled for a 1600x1200 display. I ran SaX2 multiple times trying to get rid of the 1024x768 geometry. After one attempt, I used Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a console window and rebooted the system. After doing that, I lost the new SuSE 9.3 Login Screen. It was replaced with a grey background with an embossed SuSE chamelion logo. The default window manager became set to twm. On Tuesday, I used YOU to download the nvidia driver from nVidia. After installing and rebooting, I was able to get SaX2 to configure the display. I did locate the file where DEFAULT_WM was defined and changed "twm" to "kde". What I need to find now is where the initial login screen is defined. I would like to be able to select different window environments. (1) Where is the default login screen defined? (2) What is the file name of the twm login screen? (3) What is the file name of the new SuSE 9.3 login screen? Good news! I just found the things that needed to be changed. Easiest way to fix the problem is to use YaST. Select System and then select /etc/sysconfig Editor. In the left hand navigation tree, select Desktop and then DISPLAYMANAGER. Set this to "kdm". Mine had been set to "xdm". Set the DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME to "SuSE" You will also want to go to the Window manager and make sure that DEFAULT_WM is set to "kde". One more item that I had to change was under Display Manager. I had to set KDM_SHUTDOWN to "all". This restored the options to reboot or halt the system in the Log out menu.
