Just one question. If you didn't want the kernel patched to a new version, why did you accept the patch in the first place? I don't understand how you can be pissed at your own oversight.

Please be sure to reply to list and not directly to me alone. That way others can help out as well and might have additional information that I do not have. You said Alt-F2? Are you sure you don't mean Ctrl-Alt-F2? That is the way to switch to text console. F1-F6 are various consoles, while F7 is graphical. Or, if you do not like that graphical green gecko, just change it to whatever else you want. You have that choice. Personally, I don't have a problem with it. And I never get so emotional over a splash screen. Life is too short to get pissed at something like that. As best as I can tell, you are saying you do not want any graphics on your system, and you only want text-only system. Am I right? If so, then you are in runlevel 5. You need to change to runlevel 3. Edit /etc/inittab and look for line: id:5:initdefault: Change 5 to 3. Then from now on, you will only be in text mode. -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No. I just don't spaz out because of a stupid splash screen.

Your right, I didn't. Dear Mr. Genius Aaron,
Is this an attempt to clutter the list with more of your useless emotional problems?
I believe i seen this type of bully people in the school. HAHA .. you really a big bully aren't you? Never grow up rite? Picking less
No. Very few people are interested in helping about how you or anyone else will spaz out because of a stupid login screen isn't pretty enough for your oh-so-exalted aesthetic sensibilities. It's not like the xconsole login screen is popping up child pornography on your monitor. Also, most people aren't going to be interested in offering assistance to anyone who is obviously so self-centered that a minor annoyance like the appearance of a login screen makes them write about it as the "ugliness" of the xconsole login screen is a catastrophe which needs to be addressed as if it is some sort of national emergency. You asked for advice... my first piece of advice was to chill out and get a sense of proportion. While it might not be as pretty as you want, like, xconsole was not popping up child porn on your monitor at work while your boss is looking over your shoulder.
experience people and show off you are so darn clever. What a big mess you have!! i should say poor you for having elephant brain. Ohh well ... you talk big but no solution.
You are right, I didn't give you a solution -- even though I could have offered several. Be a NICE person, and I'll risk personal injury and even death for you. But it has nothing to do with you having less experience, and everything to do with your childish attempt to use emotional manipulation against the readers of this list -- even against Bryen who was already trying to help you. It's like flying into a rage because the wooden handles on some steak knives were stained the color of cherry wood rather than ebony. It's NOT the end of the world, and there's no reason to go into a rage over something that can be fixed so easily. I and most others on this list have absolutely no desire to help anyone who is behaving on this or any other list like a helpless baby over something as minor and utterly ridiculous as a login splash screen until he or she gets a grip on his out-of-control emotions and acts with at least the maturity level of a reasonable teenage boy. The last thing we want to do is encourage others to act like you are doing. To have your whole MOOD changed just because of what the xconsole login screen looks like just makes most people write you off as someone who is hypercritical, and not going to be satisfied with any solution.
I found out that terminal control is being install by default and when even i boot up, both bootsplash and xconsole is on. So i remove the terminal control and i think the name is initviocons and bingo! no more xconsole appear when login.
Congratulations. Since it was such a big deal to you, I suggest throwing a party and inviting EVERYONE who you know in the whole wide world. People at work, your relatives, friends from kindergarten. EVERYBODY! But next time you post to this or any other list asking for help, try doing it without acting like a spoiled 3-year old baby brat.
Grow up bully Aaron.

As I said before, quit acting like a baby and G R O W U P. If you hadn't been acting like a complete brat, you probably would have had half a dozen or more people offering suggestions to your problem. In other words, your childish rant did nothing except to make most of the people who COULD help you into people who just don't care what happens to you or your system.
You act like a spoil kid.

xconsole has nothing to do with the kernel, it is just an X11 application.

Apparently no one answering your question understands what you are talking about.... because you haven't explained it very well at all. But I think I have the same problem as you. xconsole appears in the GUI login screen (I'm running GDM) and *DOES NOT* go away; it stays and in the process dorks the geometry of the login screen. GDM doesn't know how to share the screen with another app (for obvious reasons) and then passes the geometry it used to GNOME so the task bars / panels appear in the wrong places. For me the bottom panel does not appear on the bottom of the screen but about 3/4 of the way down and both the top and the bottom of panels only use about 2/3 the width of the screen. Booting into runlevel 3 and starting X with startx, thus not invoking GDM, works (but of course breaks other things like HAL).

I've watched this thread, and I have to ask: does anyone responding even read the messages? He says, "xconsole", not "xterm". No one mentioned "xterm". "xconsole" is an X11 log watcher that has been around since I used an IBM xStation connected to an RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.1. YES xconsole can appear and actually muck up, functionally, your login screen (gdm / whatever). It has nothing do do with someone's aesthetic sensibilities. Instead of assuming the poster is an idiot, despite the juvenile tone of the message, one should either (a) just not respond or (b) assume to at least some degree they know what they are talking about. If you belive (b) is false why bother wasting the time to respond?
OR the Frame buffer front end that appears on boot up to give a nice GUI to the boot process
NO, he said "xconsole". I don't like the tone / pitch of the original poster either, but maybe before firing an off-the-cuff answer someone should "man xconsole" so they at least know what "xconsole" is. -- Adam Tauno Williams, Network & Systems Administrator Consultant - http://www.whitemiceconsulting.com Developer - http://www.opengroupware.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's correct! I'm surprised nobody realized that before :-)

Well, I'm using gdm (although I prefer wdm, but it is broken in 10.3), and I don't see xconsole - and I miss it :-P Just kidding, but I was used to see xconsole at the bottom-left end of my screen. It didn't spoil anything. I think I minimized it or put something on top of it, but I had forgotten about it, till after changing from wdm to gdm, it suddenly disappeared. I don't know why it breaks your display geometry :-? Anyway, if you do "ps afxu | less -S", and search for "xconsole" you should be able to find where it comes from. The configuration is a the /etc/gdm tree, see if you can find a reference to xconsole there. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
