[opensuse] openSUSE 10.2 Installation hangs
Hi Recently I installed openSUSE 10.2 on my (Intel P3) laptop. Everything went fine and I'm really happy with this version of openSUSE (compared to 10.1 :-)). Yesterday I wanted to install 10.2 on my AMD64 desktop computer. But the installation hangs while initializing the hardware. More precisely when initializing the sata_promise module. With kernel-parameter 'brokenmodules=sata_promise' the installation continues, but this of course makes my harddisks unusable since they do not get detected. I also tried to disable the promise controller in the BIOS and use only the sata-via controller, which is also present on my mainboard (MSI Neo 2) and I also tried to set the sata-harddisk to SATA 1 mode by setting a jumper. Neither of it helped. I remember in openSUSE Beta1 the sata_promise module worked fine. I have found bug 227428 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227428) which sounds similar to my problem, but obviously sata seams to be a more general problem in 10.2. Should I open another bug-report or are you already working on that? Is there a workaround so I can install 10.2? Can I modify the DVD or the install-cd to get a working kernel onto the boot media? I have the same mainboard as you, but I've always just used the sata channels on the other (via8237?) controller. FWIW Fedora Core 6 and Kubuntu Edgy also choke on this hardware. So this means you were able to install 10.2 on your hardware? What BIOS settings do you use? Did you disable the promise controller? Do your harddisks run in sata1 or sata2 mode? The promise is disabled in the BIOS, but I don't think this makes a difference. Before using brokenmodules=sata_promise, I tried to install with the promise disabled, but the kernel detects it anyway and tries to load the driver, which then breaks the install. My mainboard is the K8T800 Neo2, MSI model 6702E, which has two sata controllers, the Promise and one in the via8237 southbridge. Since I don't have any disks attached to the promise, I could use brokenmodules=sata_promise, then install onto sda/sdb, which are on the other sata controller. Thank you very much for your help, I managed to get openSUSE 10.2 installed on my system. Sad thing is, while I coud run suse 10.1 with the harddisk in SATA2 mode through the promise sata-controller I have to force SATA1 mode now because the via sata-controller does not support SATA2.
