[S.u.S.E. Linux] CDE vs KDE/WindowMaker
OK, there has been a lot a talk regarding Windows Managers lately. Any thoughts on cdeSiM vs KDE/Window Maker? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

OK, just to get the ball rolling. I haven't seen cdeSIM, only CDE & I've only seen WindowMaker screenshots but who says opinions have to be informed. I believe the window managers you speak of fall into the following categories: CDE: Classic case of designed by committee. Big seller so quite likely the worst option. KDE: Clean & simple. Designed to get work done in. Designed with making Unix easier to work with in mind. Switch to Devil's advocate WindowMaker: I can't comment on it's productivity but it looks like another way to unleash artistic talents on the desktop like Enlightenment. A friend of mine summed this up nicely once: "When I was at school there were people who did the necessary revision and passed their exams, and then there were the people who spent most of their time writing detailed revision timetables and when they realised they were going to have to start revising, they coloured them in." The bottom line, though, is that it's nice to have the choice & to have the freedom to pick and choose an environment that suits our different personalities (have I just implied that I'm simple and dull ?) I think it depends on what you use Linux for. If you are using Linux so that you can have a UNIX-like operaying system for a low cost, and your work is mostly commercial software in platforms like Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Digital UNIX, IRIX, etc., then you might be better off using something that is a lot closer to those environment. I know on all these platforms, there is Motif and CDE. So if you are looking to program for money on these platforms, Motif and CDE (not CDEsim) is probanly what you might want to use. I have used fvwm2, fvwm95, KDE, OpenWindows and MWM. Now, I think I will stick with MWM. To me, using something that is standard across all these platforms is important. Don't get me wrong, I like KDE too. But I just doibt that it'll gain much popularity outside the Linux, or maybe *BSD, world. The way I have configured my MWM is also very simple. I find simplicity helps a lot. If anyone is interested, read the article "Graphical User Interface: An Introduction" by Bernard J. Jansen in the April 1998 SIGCHI Bulletin published by the Association of Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction. This bulletin is available both in print and electronically. But I think you have to be a SHICHI member to ontain it on-line. I have 2 NeXTStations at work, and I have had enough of the GUI. That's why I am not stepping into anything that looks like that. This is just my personal opinion. C. J. Tan On Sat, 4 Jul 1998, Brian Jones wrote:

CDEsim is a fvwm2 hack/configuration to look like a CDE desktop. You can access this once you have started FVWM2 and then look for "Other Window Managers..." (the text could be different) thru the left click menu(s). I believe it is done via settings in the fvwmrc file. -- Arun Khan - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Cdesim is an fvwm hack. Everyone I talk to that tried the real cde hated it. Kde is a desktop environment, gnome will be an environment similar to kde sans proprietary windowmanager. WindowMaker is a windowmanager. Your best bet is to download WindowMaker-0.14.1 (the last stable release) and try it. It's only around 500-600k. Kde comes with SuSE, as does cdesim. Everyone likes different stuff, my nirvana may be your purgatory, so try everything. Joseph Beaman wrote:

I am not an expert on either desktop, but here is my take on it. I use the CDE every day at work. It is ok as an interface. I prefer it to Open Windows which also comes with the Solaris I use. I prefer the KDE by far. It is easier to manipulate and configure. It comes with a fist full of useful tools. It looks better. The KDE can access web resources directly from the file manager. It treats all desktop objects as URL's which is a good thing for the future. Unfortunately it is not the best tool for surfing the net. It is a bit unstable, and as far as I know, it cannot run Java applets. AFAIK, the CDE costs about $100 and the KDE costs about $0. I believe the KDE is a better buy. IMHO the best thing about the KDE is that it is GPL'ed and is thus in the spirit of Linux. As far as the CDE Sim goes. Don't! it just kinda looks like the CDE. It doesn't have the functionality of either the CDE or KDE. Steve -- [<A HREF="http://counter.li.org"><A HREF="http://counter.li.org</A">http://counter.li.org</A</A>>] Yo Bill! Doo-bee, doo-bee, doo. I'd appreciate if some kind soul could tell me the package name for lesstif in SuSE 5.1. I have looked in the SuSE 5.1 CDs for the lesstif package but did not know what know name to look for. I too am interested in lesstif. I was able to find lesstif on the web: ww.lesstif.org I downloaded the package and followed the directions, but alas I can't compile anything. It is installed in /usr/lesstif-current. I ran config, make, changed the file /etc/ld.so.conf and added /usr/lesstif-current/lib, then ran ldconfig -v. Attempting to compile with gcc results in *.h files not found. If someone has been successful in getting this setup with SuSE5.2, I sure would appreciate the help. (The code I'm trying to compile works fine on a Sun Solaris system at school, but access via modem in graphics mode is somewhat slow). Alan Riggins W.D.McKinney wrote:

Never use pre-compiled bins if you can help it. I installed the latest lesstif on my box from source just a few nights ago, which installs to /usr/local/*, so all I had to do was run ldconfig and I was in business. Alan Riggins wrote:

Well, I tried both of them. If I can prevail on you for a bit more help, let me give some more info. I downloaded lesstif-current.tar.gz and put it in /usr. I untarred it with: tar -xzf lesstif-current.tar.gz this created a new subdirectory /usr/lesstif-current I changed to this new subdirectory and ran ./configure with no error messages I ran make which compiled everything. I received some warnings, but no errors. I changed my /etc/ld.so.conf file and added the line: /usr/lesstif-current/lib I then ran ldconfig -v and received no error messages. Then I tried to compile a simple program that has two include files: #include <Xm/Xm.h> #include <Xm/Label.h> gcc -o demo demo.c -lXm -lXt -lX11 and the result is the error messages: demo.c:2: Xm/Xm.h: No such file or directory demo.c:3: Xm/Label.h: So such file or directory The full path to the includes and libs is: /usr/lesstif-current/include/Motif-2.0/Xm /usr/lesstif-current/lib/Xm Any additional help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You really should make additions to /etc/ld.so.conf.in and then run SuSEconfig. Now every time SuSEconfig gets run it won't touch ld.so.conf because you've modified it. This is specific to SuSE linux.
I then ran ldconfig -v and received no error messages.
Then I tried to compile a simple program that has two include files: #include <Xm/Xm.h> #include <Xm/Label.h>
Change it to: #include "/usr/lesstif-current/include/Motif-2.0/Xm/Xm.h" #include "/usr/lesstif-current/include/Motif-2.0/Xm/Label.h" or better yet, edit the lesstif Makefile, make the install destination /usr/X11R6/*. I got lesstif-0.85.tar.gz and lesstif-current.tar.gz from ftp.hungry.com and I tried to compile it on a SuSE 5.1 machine at work. But I get error messages saying that it can't find X. What am I doing wrong? Has anyone done this on a 5.1 box? I know I can get a precompiled binary to run on that machine, but I would prefer to compile it myself. Also, I am not on site, to test out the machine to see if it works or not. I am working via a telnet connection. Thanks a lot. Regards, C. J. Tan On Sat, 4 Jul 1998, Michael Lankton wrote:

What am I doing wrong? Has anyone done this on a 5.1 box? I know I can yes.

I too am interested in lesstif. I was able to find lesstif on the web:
ww.lesstif.org
I downloaded the package and followed the directions, but alas I can't compile anything. It is installed in /usr/lesstif-current. I ran config, make, changed the file /etc/ld.so.conf and added /usr/lesstif-current/lib, then ran ldconfig -v.
Why did you take the current. I'd advise to take the last official as a binary or source. What target did you compile it for? If it is Motif-2.1 compatible, I got faults as well-- 2.0 compiled well and wordks fine. arnulf -- know my poetry? - c...k - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

OK, there has been a lot a talk regarding Windows Managers lately. Any thoughts on cdeSiM vs KDE/Window Maker?
I think it would make more sense to keep the Window Managers in one category: FVWM2, WM, E, AS, etc and the desktop environments in another: Gnome, KDE, etc. Cdesim (if I'm writing it correctly) is just a hacked fvwm to me. I don't like those cause to me they seem slower and clunky. I have AS, E, and WM, on board and like them all though right now I like E the best, and I'm following it closely because of it's connection with Gnome and the issues of compliance. I can't take KDE because the idea of booting into X and getting greeted with a Windows95 flavored interface makes me lose my cookies. No offense. Unfortunately, the ones I like; AS, E, and WM, have been going through a lot of changes and none of them have stabilized yet. I think I have to go back on my former criticism of E, which used to be crash-prone and damn ugly, and ackowledge that it is improving tremendously and may, for me anyway, BE the future. That lastest snap lacks some functionality, but it looks awesome, and the SPEED of E, now rivals WM. It's a HELL of a lot faster! Anyways, my view is try everything. It varies with the user. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
What is the difference between a desktop enviorment, as you say, and a windows manager?

I had the printer working over a week ago. I had actually printed out a manual. Unfortunately, it was the last thing I printed. Now, it wont print anything. I have tried removing the apsfilter and starting from scratch with both Yast and the SETUP script. However, this has not worked. Also, lpd appears to be loading at boot. The first thing I try to print appears to be spooling, but never makes it to the printer. I have checked the printer. It is a Epson ActionlaserII which I setup as a LaserJet IIP. A windowmanager makes/resizes/destroys/iconifies/shades/etc windows and creates menus. A desktop environment is a collection of applications that work in unison. If you use kde and click on a text file in the kde file manager in a window created by the kde windowmanager, it will launch the kde text editor, or if you click on a .jpg etc etc etc etc. Any of the applications, the kde file manager, the kde text editor, the kde image viewer, are stand-alone applications that are not dependent on kwm(the kde window manager) being the host, but they are designed to be a component of an integrated environment. I prefer gnome as a desktop environment because it allows you to run the window manager of your choice. Joseph Beaman wrote:

I have installed WM 0.16. It's cool--So far, so good, except the menu choices for AS that came with my distro were much more representative of the applications installed on my machine. Hints?? You have WindowMaker on your website. How does this coexist with gnome? _Obviously_ I am a newbie to this. Michael Lankton wrote: I prefer gnome as a desktop

You can edit the file: ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu to modify the menu choices to whatever software you have. Steve - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
When you ran wmaker.inst, it created a dir "GNUstep" in your home directory. Edit ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu to put whatever you want in your root menu. Gnome at this time is 9 months to a year behind where kde is presently. They are working on getting the hints integrated into WindowMaker so that it works with gnome, but so far this is all at the dev stage. Icewm is the windowmanager that is kind of breaking the ice concerning how gnome and the windowmanager are going to interact, icewm and gnome's relationship is still developing, and everyone else is following their lead. Gnome really isn't suitable for Joe Linux User's desktop yet, but I bet they will have a beta by Christmas that is getting close. Robb wrote:
