What's a good app for creating jpgs? I'm not a graphics person, so this is a bit out of my area. I currently have some photos in pdfs, but can scan them again into whatever app. tnx jk

i would suggest to use: pdfimages command is: pdfimages "nameofpdf" it will split all pdf images into singel files and if you have luck, you have already jpg's if you got other picture format, open it with gimp. and export there to pdf. gimp is also able to open pdf's. but i was never sure what "original" resolution (size) i have to select there to do not lose quality. and if you like to scan, use Xsane it is able to save in jpg's as far as i remember. simoN -- www.becherer.de

I've already done the deed. I used gimp and saved a png. Hopefully that will be useful to the recipient. Otherwise, I'll have to try again. I had the originals scanned into an ODT file, which I had exported as PDF. I just used print screen to copy to the clip board, which gimp could use. As a hard core techie, graphics were never something that interested me. tnx

So, you scanned the original into an ODT file. So, you can consider the ODT as the original file, so you should use the ODT file to generate an image file. Click on the photo, and then right click, to display the context menu. One option is "save". Just use that, gives the best quality.

if so it's even simpler: *rename* the odt file with the extension "zip" (for example ...odt.zip), open it with ark or any zip archive programm, in it you will find an "image" folder with the original image jdd -- http://dodin.org

You can use the 'convert' program from the ImageMagick package to do these conversions. | $ convert someImage.png someImage.jpg is an example. Leslie -- Distribution: openSUSE Leap 15.3 x86_64

Creating from scratch, or converting from some original? What is the original? paper? Oil painting? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

I have some ancient photos, (my gr. 1 & 5 class photos) which I originally scanned into Writer and exported to PDF. I then sent them to someone who's maintaining a historical web site, including about my old school. She said she preferred jpg. I didn't see that option in gimp, so I used png. Hopefully that will suffice. Mine is the only comment. https://images.ourontario.ca/trafalgartownship/3633142/data?g=d

You can use the "Export as..." file option in Gimp to save in a different format. Leslie -- Distribution: openSUSE Leap 15.3 x86_64

There is a loss of quality converting from PDF, see my other reply on how to do it in your case. The best method, however, is to scan directly from paper to jpg or png, that's what everybody does. Gimp can save in any format, but both jpg and png are hidden, and they call the menu "Export" or "Export as".

You can most likely extract them with a simple copy, paste into GIMP and then export as jpeg. That's what I would do. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (19.2°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland.
