Hmm perhaps i'm wrong but u SHOULD consider security first ... Please avoid using telnet at all , it's highly unsecure etc. Yes we actually use such program (that allows u to telnet X-sessions) but we only use it on our LAN , never on the internet. (to telnet local Unix machines) As far as i can remember it's written for windows/NT , i can't remember it's name , but I can refresh my memory if u really want me to , But anyway try using SSH :> On Thu, 25 Jan 2001, James (Jim) Hatridge wrote:

Yeah, SSH it a better bet as far as security goes, but that doesn't address the question of running X apps on Windows. There are no free* or OSS X-servers for WIndows that I've run across. There are some COMMERCIAL ones, (Netmanage, Exceed, etc...). However, it you're going from *nix to *nix, it's pretty straight forward, as I recall. Mikolaj Maciejak <kangoo@hoth.amu.edu.pl> said:

Hi all... First thanks for all of your notes, but I see that I did not give enough info. #1 I don't do windows! <G> Both of my Linux boxes are sitting here in front of me on my home lan. I'm at the command line of system A. B is headless. I want to telnet or ssh (or whatever) to system B. Run X there and have it display on A's screen. I'm using SuSE 6.3 on both systems. At the command line "xhost" does not work I get an error. When I telnet (or ssh, I tried both) to B. I run "export DISPLAY=A:0", then "startx". On A's screen I get all the X messages, but no GUI. Just to see I put another screen on B and did all this again. I got all the messages etc on A's screen and the GUI came up on B's screen. So any ideas? TIA! You need to start X first, and then in xterm enter xhost and other commands. -K.

You need to start A's server to do indirect xdcmp query: On B: edit the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers and comment the line begining with ":0" and configure your machine for graphic login (no screen will be opened by the server). On A: do the same as B for the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers, edit the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xaccess and check that you have these lines (as-is): * #any host can get a login window * CHOOSER BROADCAST #any indirect host can get a chooser Then edit /etc/inittab and modify the line for the runlevel 3: x2:3:respawn:/usr/bin/X11/X -indirect A then reinit to runlevel 3 by issuing a "init 2; init 3". Now, if all went well, you'll end up with a menu to choose the computer that you wish to graphically log in. hi jim, if you want it quick&dirty use vnc. its included in the suse distro (at least at 6.4). its not so super secure (only a pw is used) but it works and it is a lot faster than the native x connection over network. vnc is available for free and for linux, mac, win etc. you even can control a win or a mac box with it, since the vnc-server runs also on them. its a quite flexible, small and fast tool. i use it often to administer the servers in a network. if you have a working x on that machine simply start vncserver, at the first time it asks for a password. then connect from the other machine with vncviewer. dont forget to append a ":1" to the ip address (e.g. 192.168.2.10:1). this number is determined at vncserver startup and it tells you this number. greetings, chris On Freitag, 26. <snip> I'm a tad late on this thread, but the original poster might be looking for something like a virtual network console? I.e., they can control a windows box or a linux box running X-windows. Ignoring the security question. I assume you are sitting in front of system A, a *nix system, and want to run applications on B, another *nix system, with display on A. allow X access from B: xhost +B Telnet into B Set the display to A. Details vary with the shell. With Bourne shell or bash: DISPLAY=A:0; export DISPLAY With C shell: setenv DISPLAY A:0 Startup the X application, e.g.: emacs & This is acceptable on a LAN with no hostile users. If this in not the case, use SSH and X11 forwarding. HTH, Jeffrey Quoting James Hatridge <hatridge@straubing.baynet.de>:
