[opensuse] LibreOffice community protests at promotion of paid-for editions??
Strange, but interesting, As an openoffice user and contributor before libreoffice and a libreoffice user and contributor since, I found it a bit odd that the open-source offering will now be limited to the "Personal Edition".. LibreOffice community protests at promotion of paid-for editions https://www.theregister.com/2020/07/07/libreoffice_community_protests_at_int... I guess the distro will get the "Personal Edition"? -- David C. I vote for sticking with the last 6.x version before that change instead. Or fork & backport if someone can find the manpower to do that. actually, as long as they're not lying when they say that there will be no difference in functionality, building with a "built and packaged for openSUSE" tag might actually be a good idea, to see the origin of packages on the first look cheers MH -- Mathias Homann Mathias.Homann@openSUSE.org OBS: lemmy04 Jabber (XMPP): lemmy@tuxonline.tech IRC: [Lemmy] on freenode and ircnet (bouncer active) telegram: https://telegram.me/lemmy98 keybase: https://keybase.io/lemmy gpg key fingerprint: 8029 2240 F4DD 7776 E7D2 C042 6B8E 029E 13F2 C102

On the "a difference that makes no difference is no difference" principle, yes, if they're not lying when they say that there will be no difference in functionality then why get in a later about it. A "Strange, but interesting" way of gathering additional funds. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The interesting part is the "About" dialog restrictions on use would seem to be a bit at odds with the original licensing. If there truly is no change -- then why go out of your way to add superfluous, information to the publicly available about page to ensure people know they are using a distinct version. Nothing prevents adding to an open-source project to create a commercial offering. The trick is to do it without alienating the people you rely on for the continued development of the project. We will see where this all goes. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Obviously they don't think the same way you and I do, nor express themselves in the same manner. I concluded a long time ago that people white based on what they read, both in the long term and the short term. Then there's people who don't read much, they don't construct well formed sentences in their minds before the speak or write so what they say or write is disjointed, impulsive, pedantic. Some people seem to have picked up on advertising jingles, others on advertising blather, so, in the first case, they speak in jingles, and I'm sure you've met people like that, and in the second case we have people who write the sort of blather you are describing. Impressive but in essence content-free, often what they believe is justification for what might otherwise be reasonable behaviour. Not that there are similar blitherations that justify unreasonable behaviour. But those, whether they are justifying annexing more living space for those of pure blood (white skin, blond hair, blue eyes) or annexing nature reserves for drilling for oil (to make the rich even richer) often end with a nationalistic exhortation about the strength of nation and it's pure-blood people or the superiority of the leader.
