hullo has anyone tried porting glibc to SuSE?? If so what were the results?? I just came over to SuSE from Slak a few months ago and really like it (though I wish some of the rpms were more up to date, tcl-tk for instance). I know the RH people are using glibc and I have a box with it on it, so naturally thoughts went to SuSE in respect to this implementation. Any thoughts forthcoming on this are appreciated... mj -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

SuSE 6.0 in august/september is the next distribution of SuSE if all goes well, and it will be glibc based. If unforeseen problems arise the good folks at SuSE may decide to issue one last libc5 based dist, SuSE 5.3. Perhaps we need a SuSE FAQ on the mailing list page. This is one of the questions that gets asked very often. It would save traffic on the list if we had a SuSE mailing list FAQ. MJohnson wrote:

...well I didn't know there was a SuSE list till a couple days ago. So I certainly didn't know there was an archive of old mails or that this was a frequently asked question. I certainly appreciate the quick responses though. I have a RH box as well as my others. I like SuSE the best but did want to try and play with the glibc ... I mostly use the RH one as a toy and my reliable SuSE as my main system workstation. I bet the SuSE release will be more stable than RH5 as well so it will probably be worth the wait. I'm sure they are getting the bugs out. (IMHO RH5 has more bugs than a roach motel). Anyways thanks again. (Hopefully they will update their TK as well.) of finally, why the nonstandard location for qt in SuSE?? I guess it's not so important, just wondered Michael Lankton wrote:

I called Jan Fuxell in Oakland earlier with regard to this question. From what I understand, they don't think that glibc is entirely stable and haven't made up their minds if their next release will glibc based. Well hell, here's the response: --- From: Jan Fuxell <jan@suse.com> To: cbebber@ecst.csuchico.edu Subject: glibc Date: Mon, 18 May 1998 13:54:50 -0700 (PDT) Hi, Thanks for inquiring about our Linux distribution. Like I said on the phone glibc will not be replacing libc5 until it's stable and working without too many bugs. Our next version will be out towards the latter part of the summer, and shortly before then will there be an evaluation whether it's on or postponed until further development. That's as much as the technincal people could tell me. --- Best regards, -Charlie -- WWW: <A HREF="http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~cbebber</A">http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~cbebber</A> PGP: 768/2F9B4879 35 93 D1 42 D0 45 44 CB E7 8F 64 37 FB FD 54 5C The best way to make a fire with two sticks is to make sure one of them is a match. -- Will Rogers -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
