problems installing RPMs for MPlayer -- your help greatly appreciated
Hi, everyone. I been having a terrible time trying to get MPlayer to play a video clip that's in .wmv format. When I try to play the clip I get an error message from MPlayer that says: "Sorry this file format is not recognized/supported ==== If this file is an AVI, ASF or MPEG stream please contact the author!" Using the shell I obtained the file using the wget command along with the URL. MPlayer does play mpegs without problem. I'm also having problems trying to install some RPMs that I've been told will enhance MPlayer and allow it to decode other types of files. Forgive me if I have the terminology wrong, but I believe these are called codecs. I have been able to install 16 of the files but not the following 5: 1) ffmpeg-0.4.6-2.pm.1.i586.rpm 2) gxine-0.3.3-0.pm.0.i686.rpm 3) kaffeine-0.3.2-0.pm.0.i586.rpm 4) kdemultimedia3-video.rpm 5) kxine-cvs-200305110026.i586.rpm I have tried using Yast to install the files but I get various error messages. Some of them tell me that items are missing or there are conflicts. For example the following are "missing": 1) imlib2 2) libavcodec.so 3) libImlib2.so.1 4) libxine1 What are these missing elements and where can I find them so that these RPMs will then install? Any help you can provide this newbie would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Gil I hyavedddddd

Gil, where did you get the rpm's you are installing? Have you looked at packman yet? I found most of what I needed at: http://packman.links2linux.de/index.php4?action=128 At the bottom of the screen are the additionally binary packages you will need to get most of Mplayer working. I am able to view wmv files but on some I get the same message you get. The only thing I can deduce is that there is something amiss with some of the files. BTW, a lot of the stuff on packman is listed in German but so far the stuff I have installed uses English. Packman is a great place to find stuff for SuSE. Richard

If you use http://packman.links2linux.org it's the English version of the site. The packages are the same of course. Imagine if you had to have different packages for each different locale! They include translation files for different locales. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.2). Or use the MPlayer-suite rpm in combination with the advanced package tool. It does all the work for you. More info at the top of http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/ -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Richard, thanks. Yes, that is where I got all my files -- 2 binaries and 7 "codecs." Installed them a week ago, and reinstalled when file would not play. But still the .wmv file won't run. I am stumped. Gil

Mplayer will play everything I have sent it and it did not take 16 packages. Just go to http://packman.links2linux.org/ (the english side of packman) then go to mplayer. Download all the files, I think there are 9 rpm's. Install all the files, as I recall I used YaST. The sequence of installation is important and I do not remember what the sequence should be. Try lib??? files 1st and mplayer last. Once all the files are installed mplayer will handle avi, wmv, mpeg, realplayer and probably other formats I do not have. When I have tried to "upgrade" mplayer to the lastest release candidate I get the error message about file formats that you describe at the beginning of this thread. Just reinstall MPlayer-0.90-1.i686.rpm and everything works again. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? Ralph, those are the files (2 binaries, 7 codecs) that I used. I installed and when the .wmv file would not play I installed them all again. Still no luck. As to the installation order...??? There is nothing on the page that says anything about installing any of the files in any order. I installed the player and the skins first, then the 7 binaries. When I install the Mplayer on that page (using Yast) it asks me to insert the SuSE 8.2 disk. I have no idea why it wants the disk, but it asks for it every time. The other files all just load from the RPM as I recall. I thought it was odd that the RPM for the package (MPlayer-0.90-1.i686.rpm) would not simply install -- that it insisted on the SuSE disk -- but I just followed instructions! That is the only version of MPlayer that I have ever had (to the best of my knowledge.) I'm stumped. Gil

No need for this. Mplayer statically link its own avcodec from ffmpeg during the build process.
2) gxine-0.3.3-0.pm.0.i686.rpm 3) kaffeine-0.3.2-0.pm.0.i586.rpm 4) kdemultimedia3-video.rpm 5) kxine-cvs-200305110026.i586.rpm
These have nothing to do with mplayer. Xine is a completely different program. Things to check: (1) If you start mplayer from the console, does the version shown match the version you have installed? (2) Do you see these files: wma9dmod.dll wmadmod.dll wmspdmod.dll wmv8ds32.ax wmv9dmod.dll wmvdmod.dll wmvds32.ax in /usr/lib/win32? It does NOT show the version I am TRYING to install. This is a problem. I see the following: MPlayer 0.90rc4-3.3 (C) 2000-2003 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS) Note, this is the version that comes on the SuSE CD. I have tried repeatedly to install the RPM on Packman site (which I think is rc5??). However, using the Yast installer it INSISTS that I insert the SuSE CD and then I think it just reinstalls the CD version. It simply won't install the newer version from the RPM. So it appears that I'm using the "crippled" SuSE 8,2 version but I can't change that. I've even uninstalled the rc4 version and tried again. RPM still INSISTS that I insert the CD. Any ideas?

wma9dmod.dll wmadmod.dll wmspdmod.dll wmv8ds32.ax wmv9dmod.dll wmvdmod.dll wmvds32.ax
in /usr/lib/win32?
Yes, all of these files are there. Gil

Gil, what I do in such a situation is from my download folder, right click on the rpm and select Open with -- Kpackage. Then you can try install. If it gives any grief you can always uninstall the existing rpm and then install the new one. It's a lot quicker than fooling around with trying to make YOU look at your download file. Richard

Richard, thanks for reply. What and where is Kpackage? It's not an option when I right click on an RPM. And I can't even find it on my computer. Gil

You don't even need kpackage. Just use: rpm -Uvh <package> If it complains, use: rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force <package> Charles -- "Nature abhors a Vacuum" -- Brian Behlendorf on OSS (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)

This is all completely unneccessary. I have in the past tried various downloadable builds, with various degrees of success. But in the end I always found it best to download the source and compile it myself. Here's how: You need to download 1) the MPlayer-0.9 tar.gz from http://www.mplayerhq.hu 2) the codecs they have available on the site. The win32 codecs are the most important, but the rest add nice things like quicktime ect. First unpack all the codecs to /usr/lib/win32/ Then, compile so: ./configure --prefix=/usr --manpath=/usr/share/man --enable-gui make make install (or do checkinstall, so you'll have a clean rpm install) This is really all there is to it. And it's especially good if you have a older/slower system, as the code is optimised for your architecture. On my old 500mhz Celeron this meant the difference between being able to watch DVDs or not. As a bonus kmplayer will still work. Hans

I totally agree here. I use mplayer cvs.
./configure --prefix=/usr --manpath=/usr/share/man --enable-gui make make install (or do checkinstall, so you'll have a clean rpm install)
Yes, and if you want to enable rtp, rtcp streams you will need to download the live.com library: http://live.sourceforge.net/ unpack it somewhere like /usr/local/lib and compile it in place (yes, this package is weird). and configure mplayer with the: --enable-live switch also.
