Alien is invaluable, but I always convert to .tgz Redhat rpms are a) for glibc2 B) may use different install paths than S.u.S.E., Redhat after all is a different operating system. I've never messed with source rpms for redhat. What happens to the install path if you run alien on a src rpm? I've never messed with alien for that matter. Does alien change the install paths to coincide with SuSE's? Cool. Mark --- Michael Lankton wrote:

No, Alien is not a S.u.S.E. app, it's just a generic perl script. Usually if you convert an rpm to tgz you get a tgz, which if you untgz it will produce another tgz and the specs file. This second tgz will usually just create a dir named for the app when you untgz it, but once in awhile it will intall to a specific path, it must just depend on who put the original rpm together. Alien has been included with S.u.S.E. since at least 5.1. how to you convert rpm's to tgz?? what tool is needed?
Jürgen I've used it a few times, and have converted Slakware packages to rpms. Recent ones do the .slp format as well, the format for stampede. The format is like: ' alien --to-rpm package.deb' , alien --to-deb --packages.rpm' etc.
