Hey Group, I am wondering about a thing in KMail and if you can configure it this way. I had not really thought about it until a customer began complaining after I installed SuSE for her. She wants to be able to just get, when KMail opens, a listing of her folders and incoming mail. As most know, we get that, but the first mail is always selected and shown in the window below. The lady does not want KMail to act on any mail until she chooses to do so. She only wants a mail list and folder list and when she selects a mail to view it opens into a reader window, seperate of the main KMail window. Is this doable? I haven't found any settings that seem to allow that on this program, but know it has some hidden features too. I bought Personal and like it very much but I noticed a lot of you are running Professional; does Pro have that many more features to make it worth twice the price? If so next time around I will buy the Pro. Dwaine

Dwaine, I am sure there may be varying opinions on this, or maybe not! ;o) I tend to believe you get very much more with Pro than Personal. You get so much more of what you think you don't need and to me it just seems more complete. I guess if you were just wanting to try it out to get a feel for it or wanted a minimum setup, then the Personal would suffice. Your mileage may vary, but for the $70 the Pro costs here, it is very well worth the extra $30! I agree. I have always been very pleased with the value received from the 7 cds and 1 dvd and the stack of excellent manuals. With the 2300 programs included, I find 99% of the time a program I want is conveniently packaged right in the distro. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.3 Professional KDE 2.2.1 KMail 1.3.1 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S. I'm running Personal too, and I have found that a number of RPMs I would like to have are not included on the Personal CDs. For example, there is no MP3 encoding software. However, in terms of the manuals, I'm not sure what extra you get with professinal that will be of much use unless you are setting up networks and services. Bear in mind that if you have a net connection you can download any RPMs that you require from SuSE's FTP mirrors. -- Daniel Rees e: dan@dwrees.co.uk w: http://www.dwrees.co.uk

There are many packages, especially development and server packages not included in Personal. Although you can download the RPMs you need and add them to Personal, I think you'll find this very tedious if you want to install something with 10 dependencies (such as an Apache/ PHP/Mysql server. If you just want to play around with Linux, Personal is fine. If you want to use it as your primary computing platform, you will be much happier with Pro IMO. Regards, K -- bourne-again believer

have you ever just pulled the msg-listing all the way to the bottom? ;) Hansen PS: do you know why she would want that? does she have a sane reason? -- Powered by SuSE 7.3 - Linux 2.4.10-4GB KDE 2.2.1 - KMail 1.3.1

Thanks Hansen and all that replied, yes, your solution does work! And no, I can't really think of a sane reason for wanting to do that except she was able to do it on her Amiga computer and getting her switched over is a headache in itself! Of course, what woman doesn't prove to be a headache to all us good men! ;o) Thanks for the hints, tips and suggestions everyone. Patrick, I don't know how to do that in Kmail, but that is the way Mozilla mail works. Maybe she should use it instead. It is a pretty good mail client IMHO. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871

An easy way is to set up filters for the mail. If she doesn't want numerous folders then just create one folder and one filter (name it whatever you want) and in the filter criteria, set a space (" " w/o the quotes) and have all incoming mail go into the new folder. Whatever the last folder was that was checked will be the folder that is opened when kmail starts. In other words, when she gets finished checking her mail, click on the "inbox" folder and that is what kmail will open with. Granted, this method will not prevent the first email from opening when the new folder is clicked on but if enough filters are set to her specifics she can get a pretty good idea what they are. Hope this helps Zach

Well just drag the line separating the list from the message display zone all the way down to the bottom of the window, and the only thig you'll see is the message list. fxf -- _______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux
