Re: [SLE] Suse 9.0 and high utilization with X
I forgot to ask if someone know where I can find a detailed list of kernel boot options. The grub help available at boot time is not very detailed. thanks ---------- Initial Header -----------

Had also many issue with smp kernel on my P4 HT : no usb and no sound but drivers where correctly loaded. I tried acpi=off at boot, but this time, there was no power anymore in usb devices once hotplug is started.
I tried default kernel and everything works fine, but with it, I can't use HT.
I will try pci=noacpi with smp kernel like you Jary.
Hope suse will soon release a new kernel, that fix it, because usb and sound works fine with linux-2.4.22 from kernel.org with smp enabled.

Yes, I had same problem. I am also using P4 with HT and smp kernel from 9.0 disks. System processes were using upto 40%. Solved with boot option pci=noacpi. Now system processes are below 1%. regards, Jari -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com ********** L'ADSL A 20 EUR/MOIS********** Avec Tiscali, l'ADSL est à 20 EUR/mois. grub help talks about grub commands and options.. which are totally different than kernel options (boot options) Which options do you want? -- +---------------------------------------------------------------------------- + + Bruce S. Found this page that describes some linux boot arguments. http://tldp.org/HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO.html They seems to be for kernel 2.4.20, but I think that most of them are still valid. I guess that SuSE has added some of their own arguments too. regards, Jari
I suppose I should add that I'm another one who had a suspicous 40% idle load (showed up in the 'system' section) on my "ht" 800MHz bus system, causing sluggish operation, in particular noticeable with multimedia.. The exact process that was the culprit 'top' would not show. And it was NOT X. I came to the conclusion that the kernel was fully responsible. Replaced the stock kernel with Mantel's ready made 2.4.21-121 smp kernel. It solved it for me. (I only dared to do it since its a point-and-click upgrade: installed and rebooted.)
