[opensuse] pae kernel - non-working intrd ?
Today I've been trying to install 13.1+updates on a system that needs a PAE kernel. It's failed repeatedly because unpacking the initramfs has caused an NMI, leading to the initramfs not being unpacked. (judging by the kernel output). I've just now installed again, but with the -default kernel, and that worked. Does this situation sound familiar to anyone? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (21.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Now having a working systems with -default kernel and a non-working with -pae, it sure looks like the -pae kernel is faulty. I guess it wasn't actually tested. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=890702 -- Per Jessen, Zürich (20.5°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I strongly suggest you to use a 64 bit distribution instead.. -- Cristian "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Why? This box doesn't have 64bit processors. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (18.8°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hrmmm.. I see..this box seems to be Intel "Netburst" based ..the earlier models did not support long mode.. -- Cristian "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yup, they CPUs are Xeon MPs, no long mode, so I'm stuck with 32bit and PAE. I'm pretty certain I had 12.[12] running on this box, so I might try a back-level kernel. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (19.0°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

FYI, when I boot the -pae kernel, this is what I see: [ 0.952231] Unpacking initramfs... [ 0.958647] NMI: PCI system error (SERR) for reason b1 on CPU 0. [ 0.960017] Dazed and confused, but trying to continue A little later: [ 1.459732] Failed to execute /init [ 1.463297] Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (19.1°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Have just booted with 3.1.0-1.2-pae, works fine. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (23.7°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

NO..do not do that Per..never downgrade the kernel to a version LESS THAN what is included in initial release of the product.. other than the obvious fact it is unsupported.. systemd have particular kernel version requirements.. currently it is something like this: - anything less than 3.0 will not work. rpm -q --conflicts glibc kernel < 3.0 --> glibc wont work either, so we are done here. - anything less than 3.8 it will run, but crippled in subtle ways. The minimum requirements will change in the near future. -- Cristian "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, in this case it made sense to verify if an earlier kernel would work. Anyway, it looks like this might be a packaging issue - when I installed the -pae kernel, it didn't automagically pull in kernel-firmware. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (17.2°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
