Hello list, I was trying to recompile the stardard kernel source that comes with 7.3 (aka 2.4.10). When I try to switch off the kernel support for 4GB (that I do not need in a 128Mb laptop) I am no longer able to boot this kernel. The system hangs at boot time with a kernel panic message: unable to mount fs. By the way I use Reiserfs in my root partition and I do create init images with mk_initrd for loading this module at boot time. It works fine... until I switch off 4GB support. Does it concern the file system? Why it isn't able to mount the fs without 4GB support? Is this something weird or I do miss something important?
That sounds strange. Every time I get a panic unable to mount fs, my initrd is not right. If it's not initrd, maybe the reiserfs module needs the large memory patch. Just for comparison, here my INITRD_MODULES line in /etc/rc.config: INITRD_MODULES="usbcore usb-uhci input hid keybdev mousedev ide-scsi reiserfs" I wish I could tell you definately. No. Already check all this stuff... Initrd is fine. There problem just happends when the 4GB config is off. I can leave 4GB support on... anyway I was curious you may know the right reasons... On Sat 09 Feb 2002 16:41, Keith Winston wrote:

I don't know. My guess would be that the reiserfs module needs it for some reason, but if SuSE modified the reiserfs code to use large memory, I would have through that would be through #ifdefs. Only the code knows. Regards, Keith On Sat, Feb 09, 2002 at 05:00:13PM +0100, Pep Serrano wrote:
