We'll get the fixed 5.1 at 12/29/97. So you'll get your shipping in early january. I'sorry about that delay, but there was a problem in choosing the kernel to install in the first release. In the upcoming release this and some minor bugs are fixed!
I have the subscription and received my 5.1 a couple of weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to upgrade my home system yet. We also ordered several copies of 5.1 for our lab machines, but they have not yet arrived, and I assume are delayed for the new 5.1 release.
If possible, I'd like to install the version of 5.1 that I have in the next week or so, on several machines, and am wondering if there anything in particular I should watch out for in this first release? I checked the SuSE web page, but didn't see any information beyond an announcement of the Dec 23 release date. I currently have 5.0, as well, and it's no big deal to install that on the lab machines instead, but I'd like to use the 5.1, if I can.
You can install the 5.1 you got. But be carefull when you select the kernel to install on the HD. The Descriptions are shifted on place down, starting at the label below the second AIC kernel (this one is no longer on the disc, but we forgot to remove the label...). If you can not boot the installed system, use the Bootdisk/CD, load the needed modules, and start the installed system. Then build your own kernel and use this one for booting the machine... There is another bug with the ramdisk while installing the system. But this one appears not very often. The system may crash or hang while or after partitioning in YaST. So use fdisk on the second console for partitioning...
