I just spoke on the phone with a Corel representative. He said (i) the company is no longer handling Linux versions of WordPerfect, and (ii) it is not planning to produce a Linux version of WordPerfect Office 2002. Does anyone have any further information on WordPerfect for Linux? geno

Corel had a $150 million dollar injection from Microsoft at a time when they were about to go under. Microsoft saved them as an example of "Hey look..there's compeditor in our space"..that really can't. It was expected that they would drop everything related to Linux and blame their involvement with Linux as the reason they were having so many issues..and in reality they were just victim to mismanagement and an 800lb monopoly standing on their necks. I wouldn't expect Corel to do much for Linux in the future. I would check out KOffice, StarOffice or Hancom Office for your needs. * Jacek Boboli (hussaile@ant.pl) [011106 13:22]: ->Do they abandon their Corel Linux editions ? -> -> ->geno wrote: ->> ->> I just spoke on the phone with a Corel representative. Actually, that Linux Corel was purchased by a holding company, name excapes me, but that company says they will be actively utilizing Corel/Linux OS and will develop it further. This can be found under Corel's linux site, under announcements for any who are interested.

I have used WP8/linux for a long time, and then switched to WP2000 Suite, and love it. I have also been able to port over my winders specialized spell checkers in SuSE without a problem. The entire suite works perfectly for me, under SuSE 7.2. I use it professionally. -- Best regards, Gary

I have never been able to get my WP for linux to work since SuSE 7.1. I now have a number of documents that I would like to be able to convert so I can access them again. Any utilities that will convert WP docs? I gave up on WP when M$ bailed them out...they have been on the edge so long, I figured I would stop depending on Corel early enough to get used to another word processor--I miss Word Perfect every time I fire Star Office up (I would use AbiWord, but it isn't quite "there" yet...)-- it is amazing that Star Office works to hard to be like M$ Office yet is less flexible (and configurable, IMHO) than WP... I purchased Corel Office WP 2000 Linux and was very disappointed with it. It was windows apps running on a putzed version of wine. It took 100MB of memory just to open the help application. I ran strace on it and was stunned by the number of internal crashes they were hiding..... just like Win2000 and its phantom reboots. When I saw the results of the strace I immediate asked for and received a refund. Linux doesn't need apps like that. SO 5.2 or SO 6.0 are great. KOffice is coming along nicely, as is Open Office. I haven't tried Hancom Office but it sounds good in the blurbs. Jerry

I use WP2000 on 3 distros, including my mainstay of SuSE 7.2. I have had no problems, crashes, or anything at anytime, just the ability to work as quickly as I would have done in winders. I never had the memory problems you have seen either.

Linux does need an app(suite) like that if it is to migrate new winders users to Linux. KO, OO, SO, or Hancom .. I cannot work in a medical environment without the tools to support this like WP has. Write a letter, note, sure, the others will do, but none supports professional specific writing like WP.. just my 2c... Also Quattro Pro and Paradox 9 are superb. -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before. With proper diet, rest, and exercise a healthy body will last a lifetime. The right half of the brain controls the left half of the body. This means that only left handed people are in their right mind. Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I had to kill because they pissed me off.

We standardized on WP and QuatroPro at work. I love'm. I have the commerical Linux version of WP8, with manual! Great software, but it has dated itself by not keeping up with the glibc library. No problem, if you install shlib5, but ..... JLK

Geez! Have you guys been living in a cave, or what?!?! Slashdot has an entire topic dedicated to Corel, and it would do you well to read it. ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Did you remember that Corel took a great helping of Microsoft money about a year ago? What did you expect? There will be zilch Linux products or assistance out of Corel from now on. Bet on it. --doug At 13:33 11/06/2001 -0500, geno wrote:
