[SLE] Three Q's: /dev/pts, NSCD, identd
Hello again to the SuSE list. Well, I finally did it--upgraded from 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36 to 6.3/2.2.13. Now I've got three questions that aren't addressed in the SuSE manual, AFAIK: 1. 'mount' shows a mysterious "devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=0620)". What's that all about. 2. What on earth is that NSCD that I've disabled? I've read 'man nscd', but it doesn't help. I use a PPP dialup connection, and rely on my ISP's nameservers, BTW. 3. Same puzzlement re that 'identd' daemon that started on each tty. What would it do for me? | Hello again to the SuSE list. Well, I finally did it--upgraded from 5.2 | with kernel 2.0.36 to 6.3/2.2.13. | | Now I've got three questions that aren't addressed in the SuSE manual, | AFAIK: | | 1. 'mount' shows a mysterious "devpts on /dev/pts type devpts | (rw,gid=5,mode=0620)". What's that all about. /dev/pts is the latest and greatest way to talk to pseudo terminals. The kernel needs to talk to that filesystem. | 2. What on earth is that NSCD that I've disabled? I've read 'man nscd', | but it doesn't help. I use a PPP dialup connection, and rely on my | ISP's nameservers, BTW. Name server cache daemon; caches more than just name server things (ie, passwd stuff). Check out /etc/nscd.conf. Not really needed unless you fear your bandwidth is being soaked up by name lookups. nscd is a Bad Thing in SuSE 6.2 (there's a post on the list somewhere from yers truly) Erf? You have a man for nscd? hmph. Such things are lacking in 6.2 :/ | 3. Same puzzlement re that 'identd' daemon that started on each tty. | What would it do for me? Identd is used for identification. Generally returns the user name of the process owning the connection. Ident queries are done by various services, ie, irc, but you can get away w/o running it. I'm equally puzzled as to why it's sprouting on each tty. ;-) | Howard Arons | -- | Powered by SuSE Linux 6.3 -- Kernel 2.2.13 | Communications by Mutt 1.0i kw /* ** Keith Warno ** Make Us An Offer, Inc. ** Real-Time Online Haggling ** http://www.HaggleWare.com/ */ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
