[S.u.S.E. Linux] SuSE support dead or on holidays...!?
I tryed to contact the SuSE info departement a short week ago to get some feedback on issues compared to Red Hat (that I tested) and to decide if going for the SuSE distributions is a thing to do. However, either the information departement has been murdered, taken hostige by Marsians (on assignment for B.G. of M$), or desolved, but even a second message hasn't given any results. Which is why I hope a posting to the mailinglist will generate some feedback. So, fire up your boxes, caress the keyboards and please send me what you know concerning the questions I have about certain details of SuSE's Linux version: The original mail: --> I am into digital picture treatement so one of the points that make your distribution interesting are the sane scanner dirvers and gimp included in the package. Next to all the other graph application. I have been playing around with Red Hat a bit just to get the idea of Linux. This, however has raised a few questions I would like to get some feedback on: Does your distribution support the Iomega's // Zip like Red Hat's ver 5 does? The installation under Red Hat goes via SCSI support + installation of the ppa driver. Does your distribution have a support for easy managing of modules like Red Hat does with their "kerneld" utility which allows to load/unload modules easely? This is very usefull while using the // Zip and a printer. The ppa driver blocks namely the // port and printing is impossible. Loading/unloading it would be very usefull. <--- In reference to this mail I would like to add: How does the techsupport by e-mail work since it takes them a lot of time not to answer customer maill!? Since my written German is bad - no practice anymore - I wasn't able to post it in that language. However, reading German is no problem so please feel free to send me your feedback in your native language! Regards and thanks! Oops, this of course shouldn't happen. Our US office is still under construction and I assume they have been very busy because of the Comdex. Normally we try to answer every question as fast as possible. If you do not get an answer in a reasonable amount of time, just mail to suse@suse.de. Of course, suse.com is preferred as there are native english speaking people ;-)

Yes. The kernel/modules is essentially the same on all linux distributions.
We're using the kerneld, too. Especially for the parallel port devices this is a must, as with kernel 2.0.x it's not possible to use a printer and a ZIP drive on the parallel port at the same time.

Replacing Windows NT Server with Linux This is an article digged up from a discussion on IRC #linux. I mentioned that my professor at school said that one of his friends had a Novell(netware) server that kept crashing, so they "upgraded" to NT and it kept crashing and still is. And his friend was trying to talk his BOSS into useing Linux. I got a reply back from a friend on IRC, saying he was looking at an artical about the same thing Exact samething. And he gave me the site to go read. Here it is: <A HREF="http://citv.unl.edu/linux/LinuxPresentation.html"><A HREF="http://citv.unl.edu/linux/LinuxPresentation.html</A">http://citv.unl.edu/linux/LinuxPresentation.html</A</A>> Now, I read it all and I WILL be giving this to my professor at school to pass along to his friend. This is almost a must read, go read it, you WILL enjoy it. It shows LINUX can't be beat. Yes it is about RED HAT, but with a bit of thought, I think most of it can be done from SuSE. This is a very cool artical, I thought I would share it with the SuSE people ;) Take a look! I printed it out 41 pages in all. -- Steven Udell Wayfarers hettar@teleport.com for truth love sudell@teleport.com and courage <A HREF="http://www.teleport.com/~hettar"><A HREF="http://www.teleport.com/~hettar</A">http://www.teleport.com/~hettar</A</A>> -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Hello SuSE: I have asked the writter of BlackBox wm if I could ask SuSE if they would put blackbox wm on thier distro disk as part of thier wm collection. ------------ nyztihke: mind if I ask SuSE to put Black Box on its distro disk (on a wish list) as part of thier collection of wm(s) they include? (they got like 8 or 9 different wms on thier disks) <nyztihke> Ooog: i dont mind at al * nyztihke tests one last thing and decides to release a pre0.30.0 blackbox ------------- What does Blackbox have that I want? Blackbox sports a very attractive and simple interface that is fast. Blackbox takes very little space in memory (and equally as less on disk). Blackbox is almost completely ICCCM v2.0 compliant (see below for details) and is compatible with all recent (and some not so recent) X client applications. Programs using Motif, Qt, Xt, raw Xlib or any other toolkit will behave properly under Blackbox. Hello SuSE I have a wm I compiled, maked and maked install I would like to use the Fvwm2 button (between the pine icon,S.u.S.E... Icon) under X fvwm2 start up screen to switch to this wm I compiled and installed. The exe of the wm is in /usr/X11R6/bin I would like to know how to add the wm to be able to switch to it, just like afterstep and under the unconfigured E and olwm. I am not good at this sorta thing: (yet) The wm said to edit .xinitrc and/or .xsession to use the newly installed exe files. But not exactly what, and I looked into them and .xsession said not to edit it.. and .xinitrc was very long (got lost) If this can't be done how would I startx with it? If I'm able to remember, you should change it in the .xinitrc (for the user in question). There is a environment variable (something like WM...) that you should change. Or you can just execute you wm at the end of the .xinitrc, where it is written fvwm2. Good luck. Santi Steven Udell wrote:

go back and check the .fvwmrc file and make the change there. Look at FvwmButtons section (and the FvwmButtons man page)... that should get you going.
If this can't be done how would I startx with it? I believe setting the environment variable WINDOWMANAGER is what would take care of that the SuSE way.

No. You must choose DELETE packages instead of INSTALL packages. Aaron Seelye wrote:

Hi Aaron, usually you just have to press <space> without any modifier to switch through all possibilities... Bye, Christof -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Whenever i hit just space, it would give me two options: i (as it was installed), and R (to reinstall). it would alternate between these two. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
