Re: How do I activate SuSE's firewall?
Hi, I am a registered SuSE 7.2 Pro user, who has been learning Linux now for close to two years (I started with SuSE 6.4 - also registered - in May 2000). Hopefully, I'm not the only one still using 7.2. I just need to discover how to activate my firewall. When loading, the install information indicates that my firewall is installed but not activated, so I've made some progress. How do I finish the job and activate it? Thanks in advance. Tom , in _ usually _ sunny, balmy Florida's First Coast. This message originated from a Unix computer using Open Source software: SuSE Linux 7.2 Pro, Galeon 1.2.0-9 Browser, AbiWord 1.0.1 Word Processor and Evolution 1.0.5-1 Groupware Suite. Have a lot of fun!!! (Unix is like a wigwam -- no Gates, no Windows, and an Apache inside.) _____________________________________________________________________________

I'm trying to recall from memeory about 7.2. Boy, how quick one can forget. :-) In 7.2, I think there was a setting in yast, system configuration to "START_FIREWALL", then if you had Susefirewall2 installed it would automatically be used instead of the Personal Firewall. It was in the /etc/rc.config file IIRC. Then in /etc/rc.config.d you edited the firewall2.rc.config script to adjust the firewall. There were some examples too in doc/packages. The script is pretty much self documenting though, unless you are trying something fancy. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

In the file /etc/rc.config.d/security.rc.config, you have to fill in something after REJECT_ALL_INCOMING_CONNECTIONS="(fill in)". The easiest is "yes". Also, read the file, it explains a lot. If you have the manual, read section 8.1.3. I use SuSE 8.0 for a few months now, it works with YaST, but I didn't get it right with YaST in SuSE 7.2, which I used until I upgraded to 8.0. You can try it with YaST, but it didn't work for me. Good luck, Vinay
