Have you tried to use XFree86 4.x instead? I assume, this chip is not supported by 3.3.6. Try to use "sax2" instead of "sax". My Laptop has a S3 Savage IV and runs OK with XFree86 4.x. SaX2 is not running, here is what I get with SaX (and
SaX2 doesnt even start).
Sax: searching card...done
Sax: using XF86_SVGA server
Sax: if not correct set server manually using the -s
option
Sax: go up again within 8 seconds [Ctrl-c to abort]
Sax: .........
Sax: start new XF_86SVGA server
Sax: an error ocurred
Sax: for more information please look at:
Sax: ~/StartLog and ~/ServerLog

Well, have you looked into the files mentioned below? But it would still be interesting to know _why_ sax2 does not work. Do you get error messages? What exactly happens? I am pretty confident that you really need to get XFree86 4.x up and running instead of 3.3.6. Have you checked, if this chipset is supported at all? See http://www.xfree86.org for more info.
