[opensuse] Skype and obsolete setsockopt
A message which I see already very long in dmesg is as follows: process `skype' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT Have no problem running Skype but I find this information troubling. Just ask the Skype team for the source code and submit a patch to them ;). I agree here, you are better off switching to GoogleTalk to place VOIP calls. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There's also GoogleVoice, perhaps also only in the USA, that can be used to place calls to landlines, domestic and international. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yup, USA only (for now) for the Google Voice feature. I can make VoIP calls from the browser client (I just tested it and I could call my non-US mobile from a non-US location/account)... which is fine if I choose to remain in my GMail account all day long... but I've got other family members using the home PC. With Skype and Ekiga, the soft phone is a communal tool.. anyone can just pop open Skype or Ekiga and make a call... Using Gtalk... it's not an option because I'm not leaving a browser page open all the time to be able to make and receive calls. The dedicated GTalk client is not available for Linux, and last I checked fails in interesting ways when you try to make it work in Wine. So... while GTalk is a nice idea, it's impractical on Linux... unless they make a dedicated Linux client... and even then with it so closely tied to private GMail accounts, it's hard to justify on a multi-user family computer. Ekiga works very well with external VoIP providers.. but you lose out on the IM part. It'll be painful if/when Microsoft kills the Linux side of Skype. Oh it's not a question of if, only when. That is, and always has been, the MS modisoperandi. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

MS does not even need to kill it actively, it is just a question of time when the proprietary skype protocoll changes (does not need to be an agressive act, just a technical improvement is enough) and then all old skype versions will no longer be functional. The existing linux version of skype is anyway so outdated compared to the win version that I always wonder this did not happen already. As a side note, I saw that my colleagues in the office who use skype on windows are more and more unpleased with it (I do not know exactly why, I have to ask) and look actively for alternatives. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The current Windows and OSX version is littered with advertisements... its default mode is an all in one mode that is intentionally designed in a way that basically takes up as much screen real estate as possible, loaded with huge buttons and excessive whitespace, usability is down the toilet, finding features is a game of trying to guess where the developers hid things this time or remember where you last found it, it's very annoying to try and have a call plus two or three text chats at the same time etc etc. the list is long. Everyone I know (Windows and Mac users as well as Linux users) prefers Skype on Linux for it's minimalism and simplicity.... Well there is no shortage of IM providers and gateways, etc. I use CSipSimple on my Android phone and I get crystal clear calls from anywhere. I can call land lines if I want to pay a VOIP company for an outbound number. That and Ekiga on the desktop and any free voip account and you are good to go for international calls. Its fairly geeky, but not so hard to set up when there is a financial incentive to do so. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That is right ;) . For the moment Skype still functions. Google talk works for me but the video talk connection is untried by me. Problem would be that communication with Winblows users will become problematic as soon as Microsoft would pull the switch on Linux Skype. Does anybody has an idea or even figures about the Skype Linux users community? We as Linux users are anyhow some three full versions back on the Win..s group. -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE and KDE4 on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 11.4 (i586) Kernel: 3.1.0-3-desktop LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Only if the other party also has google talk, for pc to pc. And for pc to landline, the destination has to be on USA (or Canada, I think). - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
