I believe that what Michael was inferring, is that there are almost no PCI modems that work with Linux. This seems to be due to most PCI modems being Winmodems. What is the make and model of your modem? There is the off chance that it might be a "real" modem (one with a complete chipset), but chances are it isn't. Most people on this list will tell you to get either an external modem, or an ISA modem.
Unfortunately, you have to look out for isa winmodems. I bought one not knowing it was a winmodem. It was not labeled a winmodem either.
