Windows NT4 connecting with SuSE version 8
Hi is there any way of having a SuSE v8 box/server and a set of about 18 machines all with Windows NT4 talking to/display SuSE v8 linux, is there any thing on the 8 CD's that would enable me to do this. I have a small network within the University and I would like to run Linux along side the Windows system (not that I have any choice I am told what to teach) John Proctor desperate. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

Hi! Have a lok at VNC. You can install vncviewer on the 18 Windows macines. then you can start X-sessions on your Linux machine. Because linux is a real multiuser os it is possible to have a lot of users logged in at the same time. /Nils-Olov
You might also want to take a look at Cygwin. http://www.redhat.com/download/cygwin.html This has a native XFree86 implementation for Windows that allows you to run X sessions properly. VNC does work for this, put the underlying protocol isn't really very well optimised for the task. To use Cygwin, you set up the server as an X server (plenty of info on this in the SDB) and then install Cygwin onto the Windows boxes. Then, using the X executable on Windows, you can connect to the SuSE server and login to your own desktop as if you were logged in locally. I find that it works very well, and my sessions are faster this way than if I work locally on the server, as my server has a fairly slow video card. Please be sure that your SuSE box is beefy enough to handle the load though, since working this way taxes the server far more than the client, as the server is doing most of the work. I read a story recently where someone using a dual PIII-933 box with 1GB RAM was able to comfortably serve 300 users this way. However, an old P-150 with 32MB RAM is unlikely to offer acceptable performance. I don't know what hardware you have available to you, but I thought this was worth pointing out. Bye for now, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: Nils-Olov Fransson [mailto:nof@algonet.se] Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 14:25 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] Windows NT4 connecting with SuSE version 8 On Saturday 10 August 2002 10:53, John Proctor wrote:

This is a bit OT. I have Cygwin installed on my Win2k box at work. The only problem I've had was that it likes to the the administer UID, which is a minor pain. On 13 Aug 2002 at 19:26, Stuart Powell wrote:
