[opensuse] new computer
I'm getting a new computer I'm going to use the same hard drive if I put the hard drive in the new computer in it will I have to reload or just put the hard drive in and turn it on ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

is it just one harddrive that you have in this computer now? Or are you just adding it? if you're just putting in as a secondary drive, you can just mount it. If you're putting it in as the primary drive, I would say you'll have some issues with drivers probably unless it's the same exact board, GPU, etc. -- Michael S. I'd put the drive in and try to boot - doubtful due to module differences, etc. If you can get it to boot, and load the modules you need, save the new module config with 'depmod -a' If it doesn't start, I wouldn't risk it any further. I would pop the 11.2 dvd in the drive and just do a reinstall while PRESERVING your home partition. If you have saved your rpms with 'keepackages=1' then reinstall and update to current should be a 30 minute ordeal. Good luck. Let us know how it comes out. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Edit in /etc/sysconfig/kernel the INITRD_MODULES variable (sorry, can't remember the variable name atm, should be that or similar and already have e.g. 'ext3' in it), so it includes at least the neccessary modules for your new HDD-controller. Which will probably be ahci anyway (and that's in the kernel with 11.2). Once you have done that, update the initrd (run mkinitrd), you should be able to just move the drive to the new box and boot from it, as if nothing had happend. You may need to adjust other drivers (e.g. audio, ethernet etc.), but that can be done after moving the drive. So, if you tell us what SUSE you have and what MoBo the new box has (or more specifically: what chipset and what ethernet chip or whatever you'll use to connect to the 'net it has), then we can probably tell you, what you'll need to have in that variable. It varies... sometimes it works without a single change, sometimes it is very difficult - with variations in the middle. Just try :-) First hurdle is grub. Then there is fstab. Then the modules included in the ramdisk (initrd) might be wrong. Then there is video configuration (start in runlevel 3 instead). If you get into problems in the way, ask, and we'll try to help :-) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
