[opensuse] Atom 330 64 bit OpenSUSE 11.1
I tried to install OpenSUSE 11.1 on an dual processor Atom 330. They claim it has EMT64 implemented on the machine. When I booted OpenSUSE 11.1 DVD, I had a "kernel panic - not syncing attempted to kill init" Is there a problem using the 64 bit version? -- Joseph Loo jloo@acm.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, there is. I have an Atom 330 working on a openSUSE 11.1. There seems to be a problem with Kernel 2.6.27 and Atom 330. You have two options: 1) Install kernel 2.6.29 on it. Of course you would have to build an installation system based on Kernel 2.6.29. I've done it and, if you want the modified DVD, I can provide it for you. You also will need to add a repository containing, probably, o kotd kernel version. 2) Keep 2.6.27 kernel: I do not know exactly why, but a 2.6.27 kernel will boot correctly if you have NUMA and SPARSEMEM_VMEMMAP disabled on its config. openSUSE's kernel enables them. Now you have two options: 2.1) Compile your own 2.6.27 kernel with these two options disabled and include it on both install system and repositories. 2.2) Try to disable these two with a command line on grub boot line. This would be the "less work" solution but, I can only help you with the NUMA option. You can add numa=off to disable NUMA. I do not know how to disable SPARSEMEM_VMEMMAP at boot time... maybe someone on this list can help on this matter... You can also have additional problems, depending on the board you've chosen to hold your Atom 330. Can you specify witch board you acquired ? -- Rui Santos http://www.ruisantos.com/ Veni, vidi, Linux! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'd ask over on opensuse-kernel. In any way, please file a bug report if you haven't already. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Could youj please tell me the bug report number?
Of course. Sorry... could have done it already. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=488674
Thanks Philipp

Intel is not NUMA aware, as far as I know. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just stating what I did for it to work ! Strange as it seems, If any of those values are present in Kernel .config, the system will not boot up. I will have to disable both of them. -- Rui Santos http://www.ruisantos.com/ Veni, vidi, Linux! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There is a known issue with the Intel motherboard with this CPU. There is a firmware update available from Intel which fixes the problem. Try installing that Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Anders, I believe that firmware update is openSUSE 11.0 related. Are you running openSUSE 11.1 ?

The affected system was 11.1, not 11.0. With the original firmware, 11.1 32bit booted fine, but not 11.1 64bit. After the firmware update, everything booted and ran perfectly Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Interesting... I wonder if it is a mobo problem... I could try to put a few pressure on Jetway... I'll look for the correct thread on it... thanks.

I went to the Intel web site and tried to burn the ISO image. It does not look like it work. It is not able to update the bios at all. When it tires to do the bios update, it cause the system to reboot. -- Joseph Loo jloo@acm.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I finally update the motherboard. It seems I have a DVD burner problem. After the update to the 150 upgrade, I have been able to load x86_64 bit version. An interesting thing before the update, k3b would not recognize the burner. braserio would not sense the blank cd even though the desktop shows it is there. After the update, k3b now recognize the drive but both application says there is a problem with the CD media. At this time I am in the process of upgrading OpenSUSE. -- Joseph Loo jloo@acm.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
