Hi Stuart, Fabio,
My my, we are impatient, aren't we ? After what for you were four brilliant releases, SuSE put out a release that hasn't worked out so well for you, and you are getting ready to drop them like a rock. For me, SuSE8 has, on the whole, been very good. A couple of problems, certainly, but nothing insurmountable. There is no perfect distribution out there, and if you jump ship to a different distro, you'll most likely find more problems than solutions.
I think SuSE 8.0 is pretty good, certainly I feel the best of the major (more complete) distro's but more to the point it's the only one that seems to support my onboard raid. No perfect distro? Probably arguable that there's no perfect OS isn't it?
SuSE is a very well rounded distro, and is very well put together. Any x.0 release from any software vendor is going to have more bugs in it than a point release. If 7.3/YaST1 work for you, why not stick with it ? What pressing reason do you have to upgrade to 8.0 other than it is the latest and greatest ?
That brings up a question ... will we get charged for a new update? Hmmm ... thinking about that we probably will so do you think SuSE will give us a reduction on having bought 8.0?
Now for my $0.02 on YaST2 - Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeez make a key combo that allows me to tab backwards through the fields ! Other than that, I find it is acceptable, especially when combined with something like Webmin.
Good idea :-) I would also like them to spend some time getting YaSt2 to work via proxy's of various sorts as I remain unable to update my installation and no one is able to explain in simple enough terms (I'm a brain damaged Windows techie <G>) to make it or apt4rpm or fou4s work over proxy (though to be fair it may have something to do with my network config). Anyway, to cut the crap, I like SuSE, I've seen better in some respects (usually speed) but SuSE is a good all rounder. James James C. Hi, people. I miss the (not so) old times when Lenz Grimmer and other SuSE members were present on this list, and the spirit of conversation was more towards collaboration than bashing. With the spirit progressively degrading, it's no surprise to me that SuSE people loose interest at being with us on their free time. So, we are aiming a more a traditional users-only list. I have no words to express my sentiments and admiration about the global worth of any Linux distribution, just considering the incredible amount of knowledge, experience, human investment, and good will it contains. I always praised SuSE, in particular, not only for the distribution quality, but also for the courage it surely takes for improving on past decisions. Like others, I've been reluctant to Yast2, mainly because I acquired much familiarity with Yast1. SuSE 8.0 gave me no choice than to dive in Yast2, but they did well, as I'm now quite happy with the new possibilities. SuSE 8.0 is meant fo bigger machines than earlier SuSE versions, and that's OK. For safety, I keep previous SuSE distributions for older machines, and in practice, very rarely have to resort using them. All in all, as far as I am concerned, the balance is very positive, and I see constant progress. -- François Pinard http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard

Some of us SuSE workers are still here, we just don't work for SuSE any more ;-)

This was my feeling at the time, but I've found the ncurses version to be superb. Admittedly, I do a lot of things by manually editing the sysconfig files, which reduces the amount I use YaST, but that was the case with YaST1 too...

While that's true, I installed 8.0 on a P166 with 32M of RAM (yes, forget the 48M "minimum" for ncurses install - it's a fallacy, just tomsrtbt your machine first and create a decent (say, 64M) sized swap partition and then go for it). That machines runs pretty nicely as a nice simple text console machine for when I want to quickly check my mail, and is shortly going to become a CCTV machine, and may also double up as my gateway/firewall at home. James. Apt4rpm works wonderfully over firewall/proxy Here's how. At your bash console do this: Bash# export http_proxy=(address-of-proxy:port) Bash# export ftp_proxy=(address-of-proxy:port) At this time I do not think apt4rpm supports placing the proxy in apt.conf, cause this is normally where it would go. But both apt and fou4s will work at the cli with the exports like this. You have to do it each time you get to login to cli or you can place the export perm in your bash.rc ( I think) John B -----Original Message----- From: James.Rocks@equant.com [mailto:James.Rocks@equant.com] Sent: Monday, July 29, 2002 6:28 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: RE: [SLE] Yast 2 SUCKS !!!
