[opensuse] UFO sighted in 11.0 filesystem root - have others experienced similar UFO sightings
Guys, I sighted an Unidentified Filesystem Object in the filesystem root this evening and need to see if others have evidence of such a phenomena. The object in question is: 01:25 alchemy:~/suse/art> l / drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2010-03-30 09:56 .config/ 01:25 alchemy:~/suse/art> l /.config -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 278 2010-03-30 09:56 Trolltech.conf 01:25 alchemy:~/suse/art> cat /.config/Trolltech.conf [Qt%20Plugin%20Cache%204.6.false] usr\lib64\kde4\plugins\kauth\backend\kauth_backend_plugin.so=40602, 0, x86_64 linux g++-4 full-config, 2010-03-27T00:42:10 usr\lib64\kde4\plugins\kauth\helper\kauth_helper_plugin.so=40602, 0, x86_64 linux g++-4 full-config, 2010-03-27T00:42:11 (Why the DOS path separators?) Now I know what this object is, but the question outstanding is what could I have done to put this creature on my filesystem. What in the heck is a kde4 shared object from out qt buddies at Trolltech doing hanging off my filesystem root. It seems that this object has been abandoned by whatever dropped him off there: 01:41 alchemy:~/suse/art> rpm -q --whatprovides /.config file /.config is not owned by any package 01:41 alchemy:~/suse/art> rpm -q --whatprovides /.config/Trolltech.conf file /.config/Trolltech.conf is not owned by any package However, the culprit may be identified by what it still points to: 01:44 alchemy:~/suse/art> rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/lib64/kde4/plugins/kauth/backend/kauth_backend_plugin.so kdelibs4-core-4.4.3-255.1 01:44 alchemy:~/suse/art> rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/lib64/kde4/plugins/kauth/helper/kauth_helper_plugin.so kdelibs4-core-4.4.3-255.1 01:44 alchemy:~/suse/art> rpm -q kdelibs4-core kdelibs4-core-4.4.3-255.1 That looks bad. I wonder if now kde4 can't find what it is looking for due to nobody knowing part of a config is hanging off the root filesys.... Have others experienced such a UFO sighting in the past few weeks? Does anybody have any thoughts how the trolltech.conf got there? The 'user' config files in ~/.config/Trolltech.conf contain a lot more info than this one. If it was root's, why isn't it in /root? If it is some system-wide config, why isn't it in /etc? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Cross platform compatibility ?

According to Google & Nokia: .config/Trolltech "is the current location for generic settings accross the Qt applications". -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.4°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

no /suse/art on my system

But cat /.config/Trolltech.conf gives more or less the same result. (i386 ? instead of x86_64) [Qt%20Plugin%20Cache%204.6.false] usr\lib\kde4\plugins\kauth\backend\kauth_backend_plugin.so=40602, 0, i386 linux g++-4 full-config, 2010-04-08T02:59:27 usr\lib\kde4\plugins\kauth\helper\kauth_helper_plugin.so=40602, 0, i386 linux g++-4 full-config, 2010-04-08T02:59:27

Strange indeed

Yes, But don't report it to anybody, it is rumored to have career limiting consequences :p Thanks for confirming the sighting. No doubt, if we were both visited by the same UFO, I suspect a Novell cover-up is in the making ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Just checked my 11.2 KDE 4.4.3 system, its not on it.

him off there:

However, the culprit may be identified by what it still points to:
