[opensuse] KDE3 and KDE4/plasma5 in Leap 15.1
Hello: I have installed openSUSE Leap 15.1 with KDE3 and it works nicely. Unfortunately there are a few programs (eg digikam) a little bit obsolete for my purposes and I'd prefer to use newer versions, either KDE4 or plasma 5 versions. In openSUSE Leap 42.3 it was possible to install KDE4 programs from a wolfi323 repo. I wonder if it is possible to install KDE4 in Leap 15.1 as well. I am really confused by the terms plasma and KDE frameworks, therefore I don't know what to search for. Plasma 5 would be OK as well but in Leap 15.0 KDE3 and plasma 5 can not coexist. If I remember correctly both KDE3 and plasma 5 use the same .kde dir for their settings. Is there any change regarding this in 15.1? If somebody is still building the kde4 programs, the install should work fine.

Never tried this, but don't think this would be the case. Plasma dumps ALL of its configs under ~/.config (not in a subdirectory, but polluting the entire ~/.config directory). KDE3 uses ~/.kde so a Plasma and KDE3 install shouldn't be prohibitive from a file-conflict standpoint. Are you getting any conflict warnings attempting to install? -- David C. My problem is I don't know what to search for, for example, how to know if a program was built for KDE4 or for plasma 5.

Maybe I remembered wrongly. As of writing my mail I did not try to install either KDE4 or plasma 5. Previously I installed KDE3 and plasma 5 in Leap 15.0. and KDE3 session was messed by plasma panel. I guess it was the same thing as this: KDE3 session starts Plasma as well https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde3/2018-05/msg00000.html In the meantime I installed KF5 framework and plasma 5/KDE5 (?) programs. I did not install plasma desktop/session. Currently most plasma 5 programs work OK in KDE3 session. Yes, this has become an issue. In the past webpin was the key. There is a new app that supposedly works similar on 15.1 -- which would be your key for searching. Somebody will have to post the name of the utility again. The wiki still has Webpin Software Search (http://packages.opensuse-community.org/) which is a broken link on: https://en.opensuse.org/Package_management

No, no, no need to install kde4 or plasma. When you install whatever app you have that depends on the various kde4 or plasma libs, only the needed libraries will be pulled in. Don't install the other desktops. Each kde has a basic "runtime" for lack of better words which is just the packages needed to run apps based on that desktop -- not the whole desktop themselves.

I think those issues were fixed ages ago. That was an old sysconfig cache issue if I recall.
In the meantime I installed KF5 framework and plasma 5/KDE5 (?) programs. I did not install plasma desktop/session.
Currently most plasma 5 programs work OK in KDE3 session.
Good, then you have the runtime installed and there are no conflicts (why you would want those apps is another issue :) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Have you looked at Trinity Desktop Environment? trinitydesktop.org It's a continuation of KDE3. I am currently running it on my laptop and it may have never versions of programs that you desire with KDE3 type configs still. I stuck with KDE3 on openSUSE but found TDE to be better for myself. I tried trinity before in one of my openSUSE installations. It worked good, but had some problem KDE3 did not have and I found that KDE3 from openSUSE repos fit better my needs. Especially, I could not build, rebuild some kde3 packages in trinity and did not have time to find out how to do it. Two reasons, (1) trinity uses a tqtinterface application layer between Qt and TDE (originally envisioned as providing a seamless path forward in a move to Qt4); and (2) there was a massive rename effort in TDE when kde4 was around due to potential name collisions between the two. That has resulted in all traditional KDE apps needing to be converted to TDE before they will compile and run. Slavek has a script that does "most" of the renaming. Unfortunately, both design choices proved unnecessary when (1) TDE became upstream for Qt3, and (2) kde4 was put out to pasture and Plasma did not have the same name conflicts to begin with. TDE does have a number of improvements that have not yet been backported to openSUSE kde3 (though a majority have, there are only a few in the past year that come to mind) I've build and used both, but prefer openSUSE kde3 for just these reasons. TDE is a fine desktop, so long as you understand these two limitations if you are attempting to use some kde3 app that isn't provided along with TDE. openSUSE has the best kde3 on the planet and it is a real asset to the distro as a first class desktop for older hardware that have trouble with plasma or gnome3. (not to mention instantaneously responsive on even marginal hardware today). Pleasure to use -- and not have to worry about any unknown issues popping up (they are all well known today :) -- David C.
