[opensuse] Firefox 2.0.0.2pre & Add-On Compatibility
Hi, I just installed the update to Firefox 2 and it has broken compatibility with the Pinball Modern theme that worked in the previous release. I'm not sure why, 'cause the theme's compatibility range max version is specified as 2.0.0.*. Perhaps it's the "pre" suffix on the version designation that's fouling things up. Whatever it is, I'm peeved that I cannot use this theme, because it's really the only one I find sufficiently compact and aesthetically pleasing. I gotta' say, foisting Firefox 2 on users of openSUSE 10.2 before its time is proving quite the annoyance. There are other add-on problems that are not merely cosmetic. For example, Tab Mix Plus does not operate correctly under Firefox 2. I could only find a 'pinball' theme and that one doesn't say anything about 2.0 - - only 1.0. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You have to take the URL (not a hyperlink) from the text of the Pinball page in the Mozilla.org Themes repository to find the Web page (http://mozilla-themes.schellen.net/firefox.html) of the person who has forked development of Pinball (calling it Modern Pinball) to get the version (formerly / ostensibly) compatible with Firefox 2.0. There is a guide on how-to update extensions (and themes?) to FFox2: http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Updating_extensions_for_Firefox_2 try it. Ummm, yes, but I'm talking about a failure that occurred when I applied the latest SuSE-supplied update to Firefox 2.0. Modern Pinball was working on the version of Firefox 2.0 that was installed before that. oops, so you are saying that the security update reports itself as 2.0.0.2pre? That shouldn't be. Please file a bug about that if it's the case. Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yup. That's exactly what shows in the "About..." dialog. Curiously enough, this is what RPM believes: % rpm -qa |egrep Fire MozillaFirefox-2.0.0.1-0.1 MozillaFirefox-translations-2.0.0.1-0.1

Oh, joy. Another encounter with Bugzilla. #230696: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230696

You can change what Firefox reports itself as if you take a look in the about:config dialogue. You can make it basically anything you'd like and I'll bet that if you change it there that your theme will read that and have no issues. :D - Ben -- Envy, n: Wishing you'd been born with an unfair advantage instead of having to try and acquire one. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Great tip. There is a preference named "extensions.lastAppVersion" whose value was 2.0.0.2pre. The odd thing is that it was already labelled "user set" (and shown in bold, as non-default values are). I removed the "pre" portion of its value and now Modern Pinball (version 2.0.3) will activate. Woo-Hoo! By the way, the version number reported in the About Firefox dialog still bears the "pre" suffix, but that does not appear to govern the test used to decide whether a given add-on is compatible. Thanks!

Mine is "2.0.0.1". Source: repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.2 rpm -qa | grep Fire: MozillaFirefox-translations-2.0.0.1-5.1 MozillaFirefox-2.0.0.1-5.1 Cheers, Leen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

How is this connected to openSUSE? Where did you get Firefox 2.0.0.2 from? Is there any repo holding this version? Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It's the only version available via the standard openSUSE repositories for 10.2. The latest version, the one that broke Modern Pinball, came via Online Update.
