How about checking linuxprinting.org for working printers. The list is large and pretty good. Ken

You have a canon printer. Check out TurboPrint: http://www.turboprint.de/english.html TurboPrint is a set of high quality printer drivers for a nomber of printer venors. Canon is very well supported. TurboPrint is a commercial product, but quite cheap. Actually free of charge if you can live with low to medium print quiality. Also check out http://www.linuxprinting.org/ Also check out something called gimpprint Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

The default printing system in SUSE 9.0 would be CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) and you can find a list of printers that are supported by CUPS at it's website.. http://cups.org/ I find that most Epson's are supported by CUPS because Epson made an effort to give demo printers to companies like SUSE. At one point we had 13 printers in the SUSE (Oakland office). :) I've got an Epson 880 and it works VERY well. It's an older model circa 2001 but I'm sure if you get an Epson that is listed on the CUPS site that it will probably work quite well. But make sure you check the list of printers first before purchase. Check out www.linuxprinting.org, first off - from experience, HP Laserjets works nicely. We have some LaserJet 6p models, and I imagine whatever's replaced them in HP's range will be good. HTH Fergus

Hi, for canon BJC-2100, it is still working fine, even though if you print from open office sometimes you find some difficulties in margin. For the laser, any HP working fine. For inkjet, Canon BJC-2100, BJC S800, BJC 210SP, BJC 1000. For dot matrix, EPSON LX-300, FX-1070, LQ-2170, LQ-1170, I use generic driver. What else do you need? Fergus Wilde wrote:

Please think a bit before posting. Other users may buy total crap because of such comments. HP LaserJet 1000 1005 3100 3150 are not supported by SUSE LINUX. HP LaserJet 1150 2D 3200 3200m 3200se 3330 MFP are only mostly or partially supported. See http://www.linuxprinting.org/ and read the comments there. The HP LaserJet 1000 1005 3100 3150 are good examples for the possible differences between Linuxprinting.org and what is supported by SUSE LINUX: HP LaserJet 3100 3150 are not supported at all. HP LaserJet 1000 1005 are listed as "mostly" supported on Linuxprinting.org but this printers are not supported by SUSE LINUX. The reason is that for the HP LaserJet 1000 1005 a really annoying procedure is required to get it working: Read the comments on Linuxprinting.org http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1000 --------------------------------------------------------------------- ... this printer is very strange. You need to send firmware to it, but if you do that more than one time during printer on, the printer donot print anything. So after turning on the printer, you need to upload its firmware (cat * >/dev/usb/lp0). ... For a quicker firmware download, use the firmware in: http://chinasupport.hp.com.cn/local_drivers/7802/lj1000hostbased-en.exe which is only a 4 MB download. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Obviously we will never include the firmware in SUSE LINUX because we will never risk any kind of license problems only to support such problematic hardware - see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/1998/06/ke_printer-gdi.html Regards Johannes Meixner ----------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19 Mail: jsmeix@suse.de 90429 Nuernberg, Germany WWW: http://www.suse.de/ -----------------------------------------------------------

For general information follow the rules in http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2000/08/jsmeix_print-einrichten.html and in http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2000/08/jsmeix_print-kompatibel.html To be safe choose a printer which * "understands" a standard printer language * can print plain ASCII text directly (this can be considered almost as a proof that the printer also supports a standard printer language) * is shown as perfectly or full supported both on - Linuxprinting.org - the SUSE hardware database
Canon BJC-2100

I need to know which Epson or HP will actually work, right out of the box.
In this case you need to ask the manufacturer for a guarantee. At the moment only the printer manufacturer HP has a free and open source driver (HPIJS) for Linux - see http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/ and in particular see http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/productssupported.php The best printout quality result from those printers which belong to the DJ9xxVIP device class. See the detailed device class descriptions which kind of printing modes are supported by which device class: http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/printmodedescr.php Regards, Johannes Meixner ----------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19 Mail: jsmeix@suse.de 90429 Nuernberg, Germany WWW: http://www.suse.de/ -----------------------------------------------------------

I have a PSC2200 (fax/copy/scan/print). It is attached to my wife's Windows system and I have no problems through CUPS.

I have an Epson Stylus CX5200 that works beautifully in 8.2 Pro. I sometimes have to restart hotplug but after that it works without a hitch. D.C.

Have a look at http://LinuxPrinting.org for help. The general rule appears that any printer which is postscript compatible will run under linux without any additional drivers. LW999
