Why not use that?
Because it's free and a24b31n72client10.hawaii.rr.com is subject to change. If I assumed the hawaii.rr.com domain, molokai.hawaii.rr.com still won't resolve.
As you can see, gtoft.penguinpowered.com and a24b31n72client10.hawaii.rr.com are the same machine.
No I mean why not use user@gtoft.penguinpowered.com? I'm guessing that gtoft is the firewall machine handling masq etc? Can't you use it's sendmail? You could also set it up to send any mail it gets for user@gtoft to go to the right machine if you need that. The other choice is to look at dydndns. For free they let you have all that penguinpowered gives you plus MX records. If you donated they let you subdivived your domain. I don't know how much of a donation is needed but I doubt it's much.
Cool! I'll look into when I unpack my stuff in L.A. The smart decision would be to get a xDSL line in Los Angeles not a cable modem. All of Southern California is DSL ready (assuming you live close enough to the CO). DSL prices here are very low and will drop further after January because of a recent ruling against the Telcos by the FCC - they can't impose local loop charges for DSL lines anymore. Check with PacBell or GTE (depending where you'll be living). If you want a commercial DSL line contact Covad, Northpoint, or Rythms. You can use this website to see how far you are from your CO. http://www.2wire.com/dsllookup/finddsl79.asp Mario -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I wouldn't recommend GTE Internetworking (formerly BBN) for your ISP. First of all, they use DHCP so he'd be back in the same fix with a dynamic IP address. Secondly, GTE sucks. I made the mistake of trying their ADSL service when it was first available. In the first 30 days I had 19 days of downtime. Their DHCP servers go down more than Monica Lewinsky. If you get the line from GTE choose an ISP other than GTEi. With xDSL, unlike cable, you can choose your ISP. I would also recommend avoiding Earthlink. They are using PPPoe which is even worst than DHCP. If you plan on running services (mail, web, etc.) you need a commercial DSL account or an ISP that will give you a static IP address and let you run DNS or host your domain for you. Ask questions and read the fine print in your contract! What do you think of GTE's DSL service? not their ISP, just the DSL.
It works fine for me but I'm less than 3,000 feet from the CO. For home use it isn't bad at all and beats the hell out of the cable modem. It's an ADSL line. I plan to purchase SDSL commercial service once this contract is up in March. I'll probably be going with GlobalCrossing (formerly Frontier GlobalCenter).
