[opensuse] Is it possible to install 11.2 from the iso image in an existing 11.1 system?

Yes. Set it to be the only repo and use zypper dup. You may need to update zypper first. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks. Since I know the iso file to be correct, that will eliminate doubt about the validity of the DVD source I used in an installation attempt that produced an unusable result. I'll first check YaST for a possible leater version of zypper. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It should already be on the DVD, look there first. You might also want to do this in run-level 3. It is not necessary but since a reboot is necessary anyway... You can also consider adding any 11.2 repo's such as packman if you use them. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

To Ken S., - please elaborate on the zypper details... - I contemplated installing 11.2 into my existing 11.1 by new-installing into the existing partitions,- only NOT formatting my /home partition... - would this not work (I would of course make a full external backup of all my stuff in /home, my /etc/hosts and quite a few other custom files from my system) ? -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Open Source Academy +45 56964223 Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 Linux Counter no 114954 ------------------------------ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I started using zypper dup with 11.2 after M5. I adjust the repo's so that the latest iso has highest priority, drop the old version iso's, generally drop to init 3 and then run zypper dup. It does a good job of sorting out what needs to be done. With milestones I would reboot to r/l 3 and compile the video driver (Nvidia for me) run init 5 and I'm good to go. Takes about have the time of booting to the DVD and running through all of the setup when all I want to do is upgrade. Works for me, may not for you. YMMV. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

After reading a bit about zypper dup, I realize that my query was misunderstood. I should have realized this earlier. The misunderstand was the result of my excessive effort at brevity. Here is a better try: At present, there are two oS installations on the system, 11.1, which is the one currently in use, and 10.3, the one used previously, which is now serving for emergency and maintenance. This is the kind of arrangement that I like to keep on the machine. Now I am interested in installing 11.2, which would replace the present 10.3 release. I have downloaded the appropriate DVD iso file. My question was about the possibility of doing the following: 1) The 11.2 iso file resides in a directory in the 11.1 system, which is booted; 2) I cd to the directory occupied by the iso file, and somehow (this is the question) cause it to run the installer, which will direct to install 11.2 in the partitions formerly occupied by 10.3, including reformatting, etc. All this in order to eliminate the need for a DVD image. The justification is that I know that the iso file is valid because it returns the correct MD5 string, while the DVD I made from it is suspect because it produced an unusable 11.2 system. Is there a way to do that? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

why not boot the 10.3 system, mount a filesystem from the 11.1 system (read only if you are paranoid), mount the ISO, do all the manual dependancy resolution (there are several things from 10.3 that will need to be upgraded - rpm, zypper, curl, to name a few, after they are installed, add the ISO as a repository, *then* do zypper dup.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sort of. You have to actually run the installation kernel and initrd to install. This you can probably do with kexec, which I haven't tried personally. I find it easy enough to put the installation kernel and initrd somewhere Grub can find them, and reboot using them. No need to burn anything regardless which source media type you prefer. http://en.opensuse.org/Installation_using_images (alternate installation methods) http://en.opensuse.org/Kexec (reboot without rebooting) http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc (installation option reference) http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/iso/openSUSE-11.2-NET-i586.is... I know a way of doing a zypper dup of a partition while running another linux. I do it a lot, with factory, while running 11.0. But the target partition already has oS installed. No. What I want to do is to have the installer reformat the target partitions and install 11.2 on them. Gracias en todo caso...

No. What I want to do is to have the installer reformat the target partitions and install 11.2 on them. Then the method described by Felix Miata is what you need. This is what I use as I see no need to burn dvds...

You could also have a look at http://en.opensuse.org/Installation_without_CD . I used this method happily with 10.3, although for 11.{0,1} I reverted to using CDs and a single disk because installations to a multi-disk system seem broken (files written to the wrong disk with 11.0, grub's menu.lst losing other linux installations with 11.1 - already mentioned in other mails.) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
