-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I know this problem has been listed before, but I have tried the fixes and I still can not get a full boot. Can anyone make suggestions? I know my final try is to reinstall, but I would rather that be my last choice -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD4DBQFBUeH5hs7JGk93PT0RAnYTAKCKNSYWdVr5zzMQUCWfC58FnYJpUwCYq44I 61K3DAeEEK7zbtCNcmVv3Q== =7zqZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I used the install disk and tried to repair the mbr several times, but I still get the "GRUB>" prompt only with no errors. First, do you see the message "GRUB Stage1 Boot" when your system first comes up. If not, then the MBR is damaged.
If yes, it would appear that the system tried to install grub.
The best way to do this, is to boot the system through the installation
DVD/CD, and boot the installed system. Then run YaST2/Boot Loader
configuration. This should essentially repair your system.
You can also boot the install CD, don't install any software, but go
through the installation procedure. It should take you through the boot
loader configuration.
You will not need to reinstall the system. There are other ways you can
get GRUB to reset the MBR, but YaST2 is straightforward.

Well I didn't see the GRUB Stage1 Boot, but I can't get the fix to the MBR to
work. It says it is fixed but I get the same problem. I wonder what the kernel
patch did. Anyway. I guess I will try reinstalling.
Thanks for the information on the GRUB Stage1 Boot

Thanks for the information on the GRUB Stage1 Boot from the command line, try to use the grub(8) command: grub --boot-drive=0x0 --config-file=/boot/grub/menu.lst --verbose
This should force it in.
Also, check the contents of menu.lst. It should point to the proper
kernel.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Well I wanted to thank everyone for giving all these tricks, but I does seem to be problem with GRUB not being stable as an "MBR" for this drive, even though I know it worked with an earlier version under Redhat. Hardware is my problem. It doesn't seem to be able to consistingly mount or see the partition to mount, and when that happened it couldn't find the files - like something as simple as "messages" - even when I confirmed the files were there using the rescue option. Manually trying to enter the setup really showed it couldn't find some items. I changed to LILO and everything works fine now. I have rebooted 6 or 7 times which was painful, because the system is slow and I don't have a stability problem with booting. I guess it is fixed for this machine.
