since i got my dsl when i try to use smtp.directvinternet.com as smtp
server [since still having other problems with postfix]
since dls got conected
i get this error when i try to send, the cure is to get mail first, any
idea what is going on

It looks like a feature rather than a bug, apparantly they now require that you download mail before sending; the fact that you changed your service provider at the same time is probably a coincidence.
