If you will look at the archives, you will find that it has been recently discussed quite thoroughly. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org
Hi
Does anyone know when, and if, SuSE is going to post the KDE3.2 RPM's on their website for download?
You can get them now from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE or mirrors thereof. james -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Thanks for the link. I notice that while there are KDE3.2 RPM's for SuSE 8.2 and 9.0, there are none for 8.0. Do you know if RPM's will be released for this version of SuSE? I don';t know. I think Suse 8.0 (and 7,3 and earlier) are no longer supported.
If not, would it be safe to install the 8.2 RPM's on an 8.0 box?
No, I am quite sure that 8.0 has a different lic runtime, and different libC runtime, and so you will end up with a whole bunch of non-functional apps. If you really want 8.0 either: - use konstruct and build your own - wait around for someone else to do so, and kindly ask him (or her) for their rpms - upgrade Kind regards, -- Gerhard den Hollander Phone :+31-10.280.1515 ICT manager Direct:+31-10.280.1539 Fugro-Jason Fax :+31-10.280.1511 gdenhollander@Fugro-Jason.com POBox 1573 visit us at http://www.Fugro-Jason.com 3000 BN Rotterdam JASON.......#1 in Reservoir Characterization The Netherlands This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the addressee. You can get them now from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE or mirrors thereof.
Note that the correct subdirectory isn't what you might expect: update_for_9.0/yast-source (or update_for_8.2/yast-source, etc.). The rpms are redundantly stored in the applications, base, etc. directories -- and in fact, yast-source links to them. Paul Abrahams

Use a SuSE mirror. The path is correct. Here is a list of the ftp mirrors. http://www.suse.de/en/private/download/ftp/int_mirrors.html You may have to try a couple of the mirrors as depending on the load some may be not accepting connections. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

No, the path isn't correct. It has two extra directories at the end that Yast adds implicitly. Yast will end up using a path that ends in yast-source/suse/i586/suse/i586 Paul Abrahams

As I said before a lot of ftp servers place restrictions on how many connections can be active at the same time. If a server will not accept a anonymous login, it generally means that site has reached that limit. Most servers are mirroring a large number of other data as well. Try these sites ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/suse/ ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

So, even though I get the unable to update patches error I should keep trying this address and eventually it may connect? ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/ Or might I have an error somewhere in the url? Thanks! dmc

Thanks! dmc You should use a browser to find the correct path as each mirror can be different. Try the following URL ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0

Thanks! dmc I use this url:
http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/ then I downloaded each file from directories application, base, development; after this I install the packages of each directories. I think that you can point your YOU to directory yast-source to update the kde, particularly, I preferred to download the files to my harddisk. Thadeu

That URL didn't work for me. My general advice is: first view the directory you're targetting with Konqueror or some other web browser to make sure it's there and has what you want. If it's not found, truncate directories from the right until you get to something that is found, then work your way back down. Different servers have different directory structures. Paul Abrahams

You're missing the yast-source at the end. The general rule is: view the target directory in a web browser to verify it has what you want, then lop off the /suse/i586 (since Yast will add it). If /suse/i586 isn't there, the target directory isn't usable by Yast. And (I missed this the first time) don't start the path with a slash when you provide it to Yast. Paul Abrahams

Are you sure about that "Dont START a path with a slash" bit? I can believe not ENDING a path with a slash, but starting is a different matter. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I got that bit of advice from someone else's posting. I have no personal experience as to whether the slash is needed/harmful or not. But I would guess that the result depends on the particular ftp site you're using -- whether /pub and pub are equivalent. That depends on whether pub is a top-level directory for an ftp login. And why not test for // and if found replace it with a single slash? As a helful app these would seem to be obvious and simple solutions to predictable problems. Meanwhile I have yet to find any location that YaST can successfully use to upgrade to KDE 3.2 Why is this such a hassle? It sure seems a simple need for SuSE to facilitate. It is really an unnecessary waste of a user's time. Sigh ... dmc

I did succeed, and so have some others. And some, like you, have just encountered frustration. One useful piece of information to help see what's going on: do you have a URL that (a) displays the 3.2 rpms, and (b) ends in /suse/i586? I agree that Yast should be a little more clever -- and if the source directory doesn't end that way, just use it as is. Paul Abrahams

You have specified too many directories. You need to lop off the /suse/i586 from the paths. The Yast updater adds them implicitly. That's also why you can't use the rpms at kde.org. I think this odd behavior is derived from the structure of the distribution CDs. A most understandable mistake. Paul Abrahams
