[opensuse] coLinux based distro - possible for openSUSE?
Hi SUSERS ! coLinux based distro - possible for openSUSE? http://www.linux.com/feature/131753 Ubuntu guys have used coLinux kernel, to achieve kernel-level (as opposed to x86 hardware level) virtualization of Linux-on-Windows. It would be nice for openSUSE to do something like this. Instlux, while nice, is very far from the goal. Are there any projects that try to achieve similar goals for openSUSE ? If I had more time, I would probably try something myself... What do you think of it? -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Here is the screenshot ! : http://andlinux.sourceforge.net/screenshots/screenshot.png It is the only solution so far, that can virtualize seamlessly KDE3 software on Windows. (but VirtualBox 1.6 and VMware 6.5 may have similar feature-set soon) -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If I get this right, it's about running Linux on Windows? Sorry, -1. It has exactly zero use for me. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

For the most part that's a wonderful idea, and that's the direction we want to go - but every now and then there is some pesky legacy app that seems to be available for windoze only, thus the necessity of the temporary hack of running the windoze app under linux. That would be nice, but it's not currently a realistic objective. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The only things i use windows for is a few games, so i guess i am lucky. My wife and two sons all still use XPSP2, it is too integrated in their jobs and study helas. The time pressure doesn't allow to switch, because they run out of time frequently as is.. My youngest son is a game programmer, they all use windows XP for their apps don't work on Linux. He uses SuSE in his minimal spare time... I guess it will still take some time to close the windows.....;) (but we're making progress..!) -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (Now or never...) Unfortunately that won't be possible for some time. They're too embedded. I just had an argument with our CIO over why we send out documents in .doc format. I argued that they are not standard. He argued that they are standard since "everyone uses word." Even my wife is forced to use Powerpoint for now since the people to whom she lectures still use it.. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/20080417_btsa_powerpoint.jpg -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request

PowerPoint stuff, FTMP, works with OOffice. Of course, people have been known to embed stupid things. Otherwise, I have had no trouble exchanging. My Windows stumbling block is a need to compile some libraries and character apps to run on windows. So I run MSVC++ via CrossOver office. I am trying to get it all to work with MinG, but it is not there yet. For GUI stuff, we use Tk, so that is less OS-specific. But core libraries are a different matter. The interesting thing about andLinux/coLinux is that I could turn the tables: I could provide my Windows users with Linux software only, and not have to bother with making a Windows port. If they only run Windows, it is not my concern. I think there is even a .bat file that comes with andLinux so they can run my Linux apps in their .bat files, just like they currently run the Windows versions I have to go out of my way to make. Yes, it gives them less motivation to move to Linux. But it also frees me from having to deal with Windows. When we looked at things like .net to try to make more components platform neutral, the core libraries needed to make things work (all C based) would still need to be compiled for each platform. Most of our current work would remain. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. I don't see the advantage of running linux as a windows app. You are still attached to windows. IHMO openSUSE shouldn't spent time on this, the goal is to make a better linux distro, not a windows application. Again, this is only my personal point of view. -- Kind Regards -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
