[opensuse] 10.3 post install problems
I'm having a number of issues with 10.3 since installing. Lots of flaky stuff going on so this is going to be long so you'll have to excuse me. Hardware info as follows. ASUS M2A MoBo. AMD64 Dual core 4200+ cpu 2 gigs of RAM IDE Dual Layer DVD-R Post install, it doesn't know it's there tho happily used it right through the installation. IDE HD WD 80 gig (XP Partition) SATA Seagate 160 (SuSE, 10gb root, 2gb swap, 40GB home, 10 gib vfat) 1)DVD will not auto mount. I can mount it manually read-only. Applications in the GUI do not recognise it's presence other than as just another read-only folder after it's mounted. 2)Login would hang on the original account if I tried start x it would tell me I didn't have an xserver installed If however I logged in as root then no problem. I could go to ctrl-alt-f1 go init 3 as root then su to user name go startx and it would run. Logoout of root and back in as user did the same. I added another user and that had no problems so I thought hat there was some residual crap left over in my home directory but after I'd logged out the new user a couple of times it created the same problem. kdm issues perhaps? Problem is 3)Open a terminal or login as my username in a terminal and I get bash: /dev/null: Permission denied bash: /dev/null: Permission denied bash: /dev/null: Permission denied bash: /dev/null: Permission denied bash: /dev/null: Permission denied bash: /dev/null: Permission denied yorick@ltserver:~> Usually 6 but sometimes 10 In runlevel 3 the same thing happens Flaky! -- Graham Lauder, OpenOffice.org MarCon (Marketing Contact) NZ http://marketing.openoffice.org/contacts.html INGOTs Moderator New Zealand www.theingots.org.nz GET DRESSED : GET OOOGEAR Gear for the well dressed OOo Advocate www.ooogear.co.nz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I do not use a modem. But IIRC I read about the problem in opensuse-factory some time ago. ;) Gruß Jan -- Don't force it, get a larger hammer. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wish I didn't have to but I live out in the country. I did actually notice the 600 permissions on the /dev/null/ and I changed them but they got changed back again, I just hadn't worked out it was wvdial doing the mischief. This upgrade has been a little more problematic than in the past but no problems now
