Desktop / Evolution problems
Oh, please tell me what on earth I did wrong!!! Taking a look at the different apps available on my system. Thought I would try out Ximian Evolution, looked cool. I was able to set up local mail, pop mail, calendar, tasks and an address book all with one app. Quick, easy, simple to set up. It worked nice on my tests. I was left with a few questions, so I clicked on "help" in the menu. OOPS!! I got several error messages related to CORBA, Gnome, and Nautilus (which I am not able to reproduce any more, sorry), one of which I still get: ""ghelp:///opt/gnome/share/gnome/help/evolution/C/index.html" is not a valid location. Please check the spelling and try again. " So I looked for the file at that address. It's there, no problems with the spelling, and I can access the file directly. After selecting "help" I also wound up getting a Nautilus window showing my home directory. These are not my real problems. My desktop was changed to Gnome!! I still have the KDE panel and panel menus (some of these items no longer function). The desktop menu and icons were changed to Gnome. In logging off (or restarting the computer), I am brought to my regular login manager, which lists users, desktops, etc.. Gnome isn't one of the WM options, never has been (I would eventually like to change that). When selcting KDE and logging on, my original desktop is brought up for about 3 seconds, then I get Gnome again. What do I need to do to get KDE back, and not have Evolution change me back to Gnome? Massive amounts of TIA! Bernd

Bernd This is from the archives ... I searched through http://www.netsys.com/cgi-bin/suse-linux-e because I forgot where to make the change... In a previous message, Serge Naggar wrote:
Recently I noticed that my kde desktop [/home/scn/] has been mostly replaced by nautilus.
What's happened is that you're still running KDE, but nautilus is also running and is configured to manage your desktop. It is doing this because, at some point, when running Evolution, you chose the Help option or something similar, which launched Nautilus (in the same way that other apps will launch Konqueror under Gnome - both these are nasty and we users should really be able to control which file manager is launched!). The way to get out of this is to run nautilus from a terminal to bring up a nautilus window. Then, go to Edit->Preferences, choose the Desktop & Trash panel and deselect "Use nautilus to draw the desktop". Et voila! HTH John (Should this perhaps go into the FAQ? The next step is to switch to Mozilla for mail/news/calender/addresses/etc. Sorry, I couldn't resist. I tried Evo once and while it was nice, I'm partial to Moz. -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions
That would be a great idea, IMO. Last week I ran into that with a gnome program called Grip. Really like that program, just don't try the help or wham, new learning experience. :) -Trey
