I don't know of any way to do this with the kernel routing table (although I'm sure there must be a way). The only suggestion I can come up with is setting up a cron job to ping the router at regular intervals, and to rewrite the routing table if the ping fails. Admittedly it's a bit ugly, but could do the job.
