Fwd: Running Quake3 On Linux
Yes i know it's a tired and used problem and i've searched the net on = this one but the answers i receive just don't seem to work so here goes. I'm running SuSE 7.2 using the latest GeForce 2 (Creative Titanium) with = the latest Nvidia drivers (downloaded from Nvidia's site). There are a couple of things that look suspicious to me. First, I have a geforce2go, and my driver section uses "nvidia" instead of "nv". I think the nv driver is a generic nvidia driver for older TNT type cards. Driver "nv" <-- change to nvidia? Second, if you can't run gears, something is not right with your OpenGL setup which could be related to the above. You should have a link in /usr/lib that looks likes this (although I think I am one generation behind on the latest nvidia release): libGL.so -> GL/libGL.so.1.0.2880.nv_glx* After I upgraded my nvidia drivers a few generations back, I no longer had to set the video driver on the command line to start quake3. I just run "quake3". With older versions of the driver, my start line looked like this: quake3 +set vid_ref glx +set gl_driver libGL.so +set sndchannels 1 This is a tangent, but I recently was able to play Quake3 Team Arena for the first time thanks to Linux. I bought it almost 2 years ago but it always crashed Windows when I tried to run it. Last year, I stopped using Windows completely (except on rare occassions when work forces me to) and the game just sat on my shelf. After loading SuSE 8.0 and getting Q3 running smoothly, I gave Team Arena a try in Linux and it worked great! So, Linux enabled me to play a Windows game that I otherwise would never have been able to play. Ironic. Hats off the id software people who always come through with Linux ports. A couple of comments/questions: 1. The reference to the "nv" driver in the Device section of you XF86Config file definitely needs to be changed to "nvidia". You may also want to try running "switch2nvidia" -- I did not have to do this when I installed my nvidia drivers, but some have mentioned success after running this script. 2. You mentioned you are running the latest nvidia drivers -- are these the 2960 drivers? If so, you may want to consider stepping back a generation to the 2880 drivers. I had several problems with the 2960 drivers but quake3 runs great for me with the 2880 drivers. 3. How did you install the drivers? Did you download and install the nvidia_kernel and nvidia_glx rpms designated for SuSE and install them in that order? Or did you download the sources for the kernel and glx drivers and do rpm --rebuild? If you had older nvidia drivers, did you uninstall them first per the nvidia README? 4. Do you get the nvidia splash screen when you boot the computer or restart the X server? 5. What does 3DDiag tell you? The answers to some of these questions may help in determining you problem. One other thing that catches my attention. Somewhere in the lines of the startup is a comment about falling back to the Mesa drivers. I do believe this is default for Q3A. Howvever, on that note It is highly recommended that you "do not" have the Mesa and nVidia drivers installed at the same time. If you do have both drivers install then this may very well be the problem since these two drivers conflict and cause problems for each other. If the mesasoft drivers are installed remove them with "rpm -e meassoft" and see if gears and Q3A will run (you may have to restart and/or issue command "swithch2nvidia_glx") If you indeed had mesa drivers on and removed them and things still don't seem right reinstall the nVidia drivers (since on some systems installing nVidia drivers with mesasoft drivers present will hose the nvidia driver installation). If you need to reinstall the nVidia drivers try any or both of these methods. rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_GLX-blahblahblah.rpm and the same for the kernel drivers. If this doesn't seem to do the trick, then try rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_GLX-blahblah.rpm --nodeps --force rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_kernel-blahblah.rpm --force HTH, Curtis On Thursday 13 June 2002 03:32, clifford wrote:

One other thing that catches my attention. Somewhere in the lines of the startup is a comment about falling back to the Mesa drivers.
I had a problem with a conflict between my nvidia drivers and the default mesa drivers. Thanks to the help of another reader on this list, tt turns out to be a simple symlink fix. I posted the issue and the "SOLVED" response with the reader's fix back in May. Look for a thread called "nvidia and mesa". ADSL has finaly arrived in my area and I am thinking of using it. My question - what are the arguments for and against modems that connect via USB and Ethernet. About all I know is the Usb modem is the cheaper of the two. Also what brand names can you recommend for use with linux ? my local supplier wants AUS$100 to configer a windoze box no mention of linux at all. What's Suse like at installing this stuff ? Thanks Rob
I use the Alcatel USB 'frog' at home, works really well with SuSE, and there's an article in the SuSE SDB about installing it

USB: +Connect directly to the PC - do not require the PC to have a NIC. +Usually cheaper -Normally require vendor-provided drivers - are they available? -Can use a significant proportion of the bandwidth available on USB1.1 -Can only connect to 1 PC - need to configure the host PC as a router to allow a LAN to access the net. Ethernet: +Leaves the USB bandwidth free for other devices (digital cameras, Flash drives, etc.) +Can connect direct to a hub/switch to allow the whole LAN direct access to the net (although this is not advisable without a firewall) +No special drivers required (AFAIK) -Usually more expensive -Require host PC to have a NIC - more expense if this is not already the case. -- David Smith Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com STMicroelectronics Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk Bristol, England

A cheap NIC would work well however, so this cost is not a big problem. Praise
Thanks guys, your answers have shed some valuable light on this matter for me. Based on the answers I will go the ethernet route. Can't say I lke the idea of relying on third party drivers plus it apears a more flexible solution. Rob
Konichiwa All, Got it running last night. The NVidia drivers were not built for the 'i386' kernel and so were not being loaded when requested. I took a gamble and switched to the 'Pentium optimized' kernel (I use an Athlon), crossed my fingers and rebooted. System came up and, lo and behold, the Nvidia logo came up on screen. Ran '/usr/bin/gears' and it worked. Slotted in the Quake3 cd. Mounted it and ran it from the CD. Soon i was kicking 'Sarge's butt all over the place. Smooth as silk. Run's better than in winME. Which was a surprise to me. Message to ID : More grease to your elbow. You continue to release linux versions of your games (unlike 3Drealm's Max Payne) and we will continue to *buy* them. Nice ;-) My thanxs to you all. -- Clifford Oh No!! It's the Powerpuff girls. Curses! Curses!! Curses!!!
