No need to save anything, while logging out with kmail on the desktop: acknowlegde save current session. It will bring up kmail at the same location where you left it:)

I just don't ever close the program, I keep it on its own workspace and iconify it if I need to do something else on that screen. When I logout I answer "Yes" to the save session dialog. This way kmail and xmms and xosview always start when I log in.
