Tape backup software / drivers?
Hiya! Does anyone know if it's at all possible to hook up a HP Colorado2 20GB tape drive to a SuSE linux system? It's the model you connect via the parallel port.. If so, where can I turn to find drivers and software for it? HP say they only support Windows with their drive. Later! Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting
Hi, I have a HP Colorado 20 GB IDE tape drive, which works without any specific driver. I use BRU as backup software. I am rather surprised that such a large capacity drive can be fed / read through a parallel port. My IDE data transfer is over 1MB / sec, and it takes a couple of hours to back up my system. I cannot guarantee this, but I can imagine setting the output device on the BRU configuration file to /dev/lp0. I am sorry to be so vague, but this is the best I can do for the moment. Hi Further to my previous post, there is a parallel port tape device in the 2.4.18 kernel of SuSE 8.0 /dev/pt0 First parallel port ATAPI tape and /dev/npt0 (non rewinding) Details taken from /usr/src/linux-2.4.18.SuSE/Documentation/devices.txt BRU is a commercial product, but other OS tape software such as mt should work. Hope this helps Basil On Tuesday 08 Jul 2003 21:40, Anders Norrbring wrote:

Hi
Further to my previous post, there is a parallel port tape device in the 2.4.18 kernel of SuSE 8.0
/dev/pt0 First parallel port ATAPI tape
and /dev/npt0 (non rewinding)
Details taken from
/usr/src/linux-2.4.18.SuSE/Documentation/devices.txt
Thanks Basil, I just tried a simple 'mt -t /dev/pt0 retension' but it reports mt: /dev/pt0: No such device So, I guess it's not recognised? Or do I have to make the system aware of the drive in any way? I just plugged it in to the parallel port and tried to run.. Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting
