[opensuse] Leap 15.0: how to get the penguin boot screen
I followed the steps at https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Animated_penguin_GRUB_splash_screen (first it was necessary to install gfxboot which wasn't installed at installation), and verified that /boot/message does indeed show "penguin=100". Clearly, there is something I still need to do that isn't mentioned in that URL, because I still see the default boot screen. This is the first time I've ever played with anything to do with the boot process, so any help is greatly appreciated. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

What you didn't do, since it wasn't mentioned, was replace Grub 2 with Grub. I just updated that page. It was long overdue. Gfxboot AFAICT only works with Grub 0.97, which I still use on all MBR PCs. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." The Leap 15.0 startup notes do include a chapter heading (from memory) "Dancing Penguins on the Boot Screen", but that only refers to reader to some "other manual", which either a) I haven't found yet, or b) doesn't (yet?) exist. I assume, then, since GRUB2 is the default boot loader, that there is a way to get the penguins with GRUB2...? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

OK, I did find another site at http://wiki.rosalab.ru/en/index.php/Grub2_theme_/_reference which looks like it might be possible. I'll "just" need to copy over the images I need from the gfxboot rpm, and then start playing with the config files. The background (with the igloo) I'm fairly sure won't be too difficult, getting the penguins in there I'm not too sure of. Really, though, I'd have thought <wink wink> that in 2018, choosing the penguin boot screen would be an option at install time -- for both versions of GRUB. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If using only MBR disks, missing them isn't necessary. Penguins are _one_ of the benefits, because of the openSUSE Gfxboot theme's instant cmdline display and edit, for me sticking with Grub & Gfxboot. With hundreds of installations spread across bunches of PCs using various displays, I want to see, and maybe edit, what's on the cmdline before I select to proceed. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. All my new disks are GPT, not matter size and age of computer. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

As per the instructions on that site, I put the background image, with the igloo (pback.jpg, from gfxboot package), into /boot/grub2/themes/openSUSE/theme.txt and /etc/default/grub, ran "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg" and rebooted. Grub2 gave me an error "file format not supported" and continued in text mode.
